Pesaro: Friday 29 March, the battle of science against cancer told by Roberto Burioni
“The match against cancer is at match point. There is a formidable opponent in front of us: achieving this point will not be easy, the challenges are many. But, finally, we are ahead." That's what he claims Robert Burioni in his latest book “Match Points. How science is defeating cancer” (The ship of Theseus) which the author will present on Friday 29 March in Pesaro (Alusfera in Piazza del Popolo, 18pm, entrance from the back of the stage) as part of the 'Capital Encounters' exhibition in dialogue with the journalist Simonetta Marfoglia.
Why does a healthy cell turn into a cancerous cell? And what allows the disease to spread, putting our health at risk? What stage is cancer research at and what can we do in our everyday lives to fight it? These are some of the questions that Burioni, doctor, popularizer and professor of Microbiology and Virology, answers in his book with a simple and direct language, focusing on the scientific progress that in recent years has made it possible to tackle the disease more effectively. Pages that explain to us how the disease arises and how it acts in our body, but which also illustrate the results achieved by science, unthinkable until recently and which allow us to look to the future with hope. Results for which today, more and more frequently, it is possible to make an early diagnosis and take action with effective treatments, sometimes cure and often slow down the disease in a decisive way for the patient's life.
'Capital Encounters' will continue on Thursday 4 April with 'Europe in the changing world' a conversation between the European Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni and the mayor of Pesaro Matteo Ricci. The meeting will be moderated by journalist Alessandra Sardoni (18.30 pm – Alusfera in Piazza del Popolo).
