Milano: at Palazzo Lombardia the conference “The art of learning. Artificial intelligence in teaching”
The use of artificial intelligence in education represents a great opportunity for students and teachers. To make the most of it, it is necessary to also consider the ethical aspects, so that this technology is truly at the service of people. This was the message that emerged during the conference organized in Lombardy Palace and titled 'The Art of Learning: Artificial Intelligence in Teaching'. The Minister of Education and Merit spoke, Joseph Vallettara, the president of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, the regional councilors Simona Tironi (Education, Training, Work) and Alessandro Fermi (University, Research and Innovation).
At the heart of the working moment was the presentation of the guidelines drafted by the technical board of experts established by the Lombardy Region to analyze the ethical implications of the use of artificial intelligence in the school environment and provide indications for a conscious use of this technology in the classroom.
Also present at the event were a number of representatives of companies that have collaborated on the initiative free of charge.
PRESIDENT FONTANA: GIVING YOUNG PEOPLE THE TOOLS FOR ETHICAL USE OF AI IS A PRIORITY
“We are giving priority to artificial intelligence,” explained the president. Fontana – as well as the digital transition as a whole. This technology must enter schools for two reasons: on the one hand, to make young people more aware of the digital evolution that it can bring and, on the other, to teach students all those fundamental ethical aspects, inherent, for example, to the issue of data and, in general, compliance with national and European regulations”.
“It is important – he added – to start talking about these issues in a targeted way and introduce our children to a conscious use of artificial intelligence, providing them with adequate limits and tools to make the most of this technology, which is no longer a reality of the future, but is already part of our present”.
MINISTER VALDITARA: TEACHER TRAINING IS FUNDAMENTAL
“Artificial intelligence – he declared Valditara – must be at the service of students, and more generally, of the person. We insist a lot on this point. It is essential to have adequately trained teachers, capable of making the best use of this tool, which can never replace teachers. Instead, it will be an important aid to enhance teaching and promote the educational success of young people”.
The minister also reiterated that an experiment has already been started in three schools in Lombardy, a Milano, Cologno Monzese and Colico, with the aim of increasing the number of institutions involved. Valditara also highlighted how in general this technology is in line with its policy of personalising training.
COUNCILLOR TIRONI: LOMBARDIA IT IS THE FIRST REGION TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE IN A TARGETED WAY
“We are the first region in Italy – the councilor underlined Tironi – to put the topic of artificial intelligence at the center of our schools in Lombardy, ensuring that this tool represents a huge opportunity and not a risk for our students. We have involved 10 top experts on the topic who have developed open guidelines, precisely because artificial intelligence is a technology in continuous evolution and these rules will be constantly updated. Our goal is to highlight the importance of an ethical approach to the issue. We want to promote a use of this technology that places the person at the center through the involvement of our teachers”.
“We will start with a series of training packages – he clarified – to effectively bring artificial intelligence into schools, because we want to build a school for our children that looks to the future and that knows how to combine technological innovation and the values of our society with an open mind and an ethical heart”.
PATH SHARED WITH TEACHERS
“I really wanted to create a technical board of experts – added – that objectively provided us with a useful document to address this issue. Regione Lombardia intends to provide everyone with tools and support to address issues such as algorithmic transparency, privacy, data protection and the inestimable value of critical thinking, which is more urgent than ever today”.
THE NOTICE
“In addition to this document – he continued Tironi – we have opened and already concluded a call dedicated to all private companies that deal with teacher training to be able to have a specific technical contribution of online training packages to make available to teachers. We have had a strong response, I am proud of it, it means that we have touched the right key. Lombardy Region is also a leader in public-private collaboration and also in this case we are the first region that wants to seriously address the issue of artificial intelligence”.
COUNCILLOR FERMI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS THE MARKED ROAD FOR THE FUTURE
The councilor who addressed the artificial intelligence-university binomial was Fermi. “Even the academic world – he commented – has begun to address the issue through the introduction of a series of guidelines and the establishment of targeted courses, now present in almost all universities in Lombardy. In some cases, a complete degree course has even been launched. This makes it clear that artificial intelligence is a marked path for the future. For this reason, being able to create an initial connection both in the field of professional training and in the university can be useful to facilitate young people's access to the world of work”.
