Messina, “Horcynus Festival 2022” starts tomorrow.
“Horizons – ecological transition and young generations” is the title of the twentieth edition of the Horcynus Festival, starting tomorrow, Wednesday 20th, at the Horcynus Orca Park in Capo Peloro, organized by the Horcynus Orca Foundation and the Community Foundation of Messina, sponsored by the Municipality of Messina. The prologue of the Festival, from tomorrow, Wednesday 20th, to Friday 22nd, hosts a great classic of international cinema: the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy by Peter Jackson.
The opening night
The opening of the 2022 edition is with literature: on Saturday 23rd, at the Horcynus Orca Park, the Messina author Nadia Terranova presents her book "Trema la Notte". The event is organized by Feltrinelli Messina who, at the Festival, also takes care of the presentation of another Messina author, Lelio Bonaccorso, and his "Wind of Freedom", scheduled for Wednesday 27th, at 19.30 pm. The section also includes meetings with Alessandro Tumino, author of "La Punta" (Monday 25th, at 19pm) and with the narrative workshop for children "The Journey of Nabu" (Edizioni Mesogea), curated by Anita Magno.
“Nomadic Music”
For the “Nomade Music” section, curated by Giacomo Farina and Luigi Polimeni, three events are scheduled. On Sunday 24th, at 21pm, Eleonora Bordonaro presents in concert her latest recording work, “Moviti ferme”, finalist in the Targhe Tenco among the best records in dialect. She does it together with I Giudei di San Fratello, for a contamination between Sicilian dialect, minority languages such as the Italic Gallo of San Fratello, popular music, blues, rock and electronic.
During the singer-songwriter's concert, which combines the ancestral power of the Sicilian musical tradition, of marranzano and percussion, with contemporary scenarios, the Jews of San Fratello will also take to the stage for some songs, with their costumes and fanfare trumpets, in a of the very few performances outside their Easter ritual context.
On Friday 29th, at 21pm, in the new Amphitheater of Forte Petrazza, the Festival offers a concert by the Italian-Brazilian pianist Marcelo Cesena. The performance is built on the basis of various discussion sessions with the educators and the boys and girls of the educational projects managed by the Community Foundation in Messina. Cesena will put their thoughts, feelings and emotions to music as well as pieces from his repertoire.
Back at Horcynus Orca Park, Monday 1 August, at 21pm, one of the main events of the 2022 edition of the Horcynus Festival: “Possible Horizons – Words and Music for a Green Planet” with Stefano Mancuso and Marlene Kuntz in concert. For the first time in Messina, Marlene Kuntz with "Karma Clima", their new recording project due out in September, take a stand in the fight against climate change. The concert will be preceded by a discussion with Stefano Mancuso. The 2022 Horcynus Orca Prize will go to musicians and Mancuso, botanist, academic and essayist.
The film section
As regards the cinematographic section of the Festival, the screenings begin on Monday 25th, at 21pm, with "Piccolo Corpo" by Laura Samani, for the "Fuori Norma" series - curated by Adriano Aprà - which selects recent films by Italian authors characterized by an original search for new expressive ways and unusual themes.
From Tuesday 26th to Thursday 28th, the films of the Festival del Cine Español y latinoamericano, directed by Iris Peralta and Federico Sartori, return to Capo Peloro. The films are in the original version with Italian subtitles and the selection gives ample space to films that are otherwise invisible in Italy. Three titles are on the programme: “Bienvenido a Farewell-Gutmann”, by Cuba (Wednesday 26th, at 21pm) and “Intemperie” by Benito Zambrano (Thursday 27th, at 21pm).
In the film programme, for the historic section of the Festival “Archipelagos of Vision” directed by Franco Jannuzzi, “Voyage of time”, by Terrence Malick (Monday 1 August, at 21pm) and “Il Sale della Terra”, by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgato (Thursday 4 August, at 21pm). For “Mare di Cinema Arabo”, curated by Erfan Rashid, the film “Europa” by Iraqi director Haider Rashid will be screened (Tuesday 2 August, at 21pm).
Deepwater
A broad reflection on cinema of social commitment will be at the center of the workshop "A platform for social cinema", scheduled for Tuesday 26th, at 18pm. About ten guests from the world of cinema will reflect on the opportunity of making efforts coexist and coincide of production and distribution for films of civic commitment. For the theatrical section of the Festival, curated by Massimo Barilla, on Saturday 30th, at 21pm, at the Horcynus Orca Park in Capo Peloro, another of the main events of the XX edition of the Festival is with “Acquaprofonda ”, a civic and contemporary opera by the Teatro Sociale of Como in co-production with the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
The original music is by Giovanni Sollima, the libretto by Giancarlo De Cataldo. The event is part of the activities of the “Di Bellezza si Vive” project, financed by “Con i Bambini”, of which the Horcynus Orca Foundation is a partner and the Messina Community Foundation is a co-financing body. The show, for the first time on stage outside a theater and in an open space, uniquely portrays one of the most relevant themes of our time: water pollution.
Serena, the protagonist of the story, will be able to convince her father to act correctly and will help a whale free itself from so much plastic in its belly. Thus Acquaprofonda educates spectators of all ages about environmental sustainability and brings young generations closer to listening to opera music, revisited in a contemporary and accessible key. The Horcynus Festival will return at the end of the summer, from Monday 29 August onwards, with Summer School of cinema and art and artistic residencies.
