Messina celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Franco Basaglia, Monday 11 March at the Cittadella della Salute Mandalari
An acknowledgment to the well-known psychiatrist of the fundamental contribution of his thought and work in favor of the dignity and freedom of people, even the most vulnerable ones.
Messina celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Franco Basaglia on Monday 11 March at the Cittadella della Salute Mandalari.
On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the psychiatrist Frank Basaglia, born on March 11, 1924, Monday 11th, at 10 am, at the Cittadella della Salute Mandalari, will be held “Memory and Future”, an event sponsored by the Municipality of Messina, and organized by the Camelot Day Center Mental Health Department of the ASP of Messina, a structure directed by the psychiatrist Tiziana Frigione.
The meeting will be attended by the councilor for health policies Alessandra Calafiore, the director of the mental health department Gaspare Motta, the director of the NPI Santina Patanè, and Nina Santisi, director of the UOC of psychology.
The event includes a series of interventions with the aim of retracing the history traced by Basaglia up to the present day, which sees us as protagonists of a present still to be built and on which to work together, therefore placing ourselves between “Memory and Future”.
Given the new critical issues in the sector, the meeting is aimed at encouraging the responsibilities of public institutions, private social sectors and the associations that will intervene.
Basaglia, psychiatrist and neurologist, and promoter of a radical reform of psychiatric care implemented with Law 180/1978, known precisely as “Basaglia Law”, led to the closure of mental hospitals, giving rise to the deinstitutionalization movement for a more inclusive, freer and more just society and starting a process of rethinking psychiatric care in Italy.
The event will also be enriched by performances by Maurizio Puglisi and Laura Giacobbe of the Nutrimenti Terrestri cultural association.
