Italian Downhill Championships. The 2024 tricolor jerseys of the most adrenaline-filled and spectacular off-road specialty have been awarded to Cortina d'Ampezzo.
This weekend the Italian Downhill Championships were held in Cortina d'Ampezzo in a single event. Two days of sport, fun, feeling good in the open air but above all entertainment. In the heat on Sunday 21 July, on a track considered perfect by the organizers and the many riders present, the best national athletes challenged each other to the sound of hundredths of a second.
“A very intense day for everyone – commented Riccardo Tagliabue, Downhill Italia manager – with a huge turnout of the public who enthusiastically followed all phases of the race on the Lucifer track, the absolute protagonist of the Cortina Bike Land. A route that is not particularly long but very technical, all undergrowth, with terrain that has perfectly drained the water that fell from the previous days with strong summer storms. Nothing could be taken for granted and we knew that the victories in the various categories would be determined by minimal gaps."
Many FCI authorities present on the race field starting from the Vice President Ruggero Cazzaniga, the President of the Off-Road Commission Massimo Ghirotto, Valentina Massa also from the Commission and the National Coach Simone Tartana Fabbri, all awarding the champions together with Alessandra Biasin, representing of Tofana, and Alessandro Zoppelli, of the Cortina Bike Land of Tofana and Dolomiti Bike Company.
“I have just returned from the event and I feel the need to thank everyone also on behalf of the Italian Cycling Federation for the splendid success of the Italian Downhill Championship - declared Vice President Ruggero Cazzanig who added"I was favorably impressed by the commitment and professionalism demonstrated, the excellent technical organisation, the care taken in choosing the route while respecting nature without lacking attention to the safety of the athletes, the careful organization of logistics and the deployment of equipment. I was also struck by the joyful and participatory climate between athletes and technical and organizational staff, which is creating an "ever-widening family". I close by thanking the Municipal Administration which provided the permits to be able to carry out this competition in such a beautiful and particular environment".
For Downhill Italia manager Riccardo Tagliabue the appointment with Cortina is certainly a "goodbye". “Everything went perfectly – he added – and the large number of participants and the spectacular nature of the track determined its success. A special thank you to Alessandro Zoppelli and his staff for the competence demonstrated, to all of Cortina for welcoming the hundreds of athletes and the many enthusiasts, to the tireless volunteers present on the track and to the rescue workers. Thanks also to the Tofana facilities company and the FCI, which, with the presence of all the authorities and top federal officials, provided us with great recognition and encouragement to take our passion for this sport ever higher".
