Festa de Lo Pan Ner – The breads of the Alps: events in the provinces of Brescia, Sondrio, Varese and Bergamo.
The Feast of Lo Pan Ner is part of a widespread and cross-border event, now in its eighth edition, shared with Valle d'Aosta and Piedmont regions (Val d'Ossola and Municipality of Lozzolo) ei Neighboring countries, Switzerland (Valposchiavo in the Canton of Grisons and the Canton of Valais), France (Parc des Bauges) e Slovenia (Upper Sava Valley).
Brescia, Bergamo, Varese and Sondrio are the Lombard provinces that on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 October 2023 offer a series of events dedicated to the Festa de "Lo Pan Ner – The Breads of the Alps”.
Over 40 communities, with 42 ovens and ancient mills, in particular of Valtellina and Valle Camonica, united, over the centuries, by the cultivation of rye, which has played a fundamental role in the Alpine gastronomic tradition and in the management of the territory, they prepare bread using rye and wheat, ground on site in the ancient mills brought back into operation, and reactivating for the days of private and community bakeries celebrate.
Educational-sensory laboratories for children and schools are designed to introduce new generations to the art of baking, so that a product is not lost heritage of knowledge, to safeguard territorial identities, but also the environment and the local economy. In some locations, you can witness the sowing rye and cutting buckwheat, pay visits to ethnographic and eco-museums, to discover the oldest tools used in bread-making. In particular, join the party: Valfurva Ecomuseum, Mortirolo Resistance Ecomuseum (organises initiatives in the two provinces of Sondrio and Brescia), Ecomuseum of the Alta Via dell'Oglio, Concarena Ecomuseum – Mountain of light and finally the Vaso Re Ecomuseum.
In the province of Brescia, Bienno between 'The most beautiful villages in Italy', you can visit the Mill Museum from the 1400s in via Glere, functioning thanks to the energy and strength of the water brought to the village by the Vaso Re artificial canal. On 14 October, at 19 pm, aperitif at House of Artists with local products and rye bread. In Cormignano and Davena di Vezza d'Oglio, baked snack and breakfast with a weekend full of events dedicated to traditions; to Duty of Corteno Gorgi one is still activeancient Vicinia owner of a visitable dairy farm, exhibition of pork butchers, a bread-making ceremony in the ancient ovens, workshops, visit to cellars, markets. Many other activities they take place in Malegno, Ossimo, Cerveno, Saviore dell'Adamello, Garda di Sonico, Vezza d'Oglio, Monno.
In the Sondrio area, a Grosio, Grosotto and Mazzo, in Valtellina, visitors can walk the bread route. We start in the morning with a breakfast in the buckwheat fields of Grosio, walk through a centuries-old chestnut grove to arrive in Grosotto and visit an ancient mill. In Mazzo bread is made in the ancient oven of Lavizzari Palace. Other appointments in Pila Boscarini di Teglio, Ponte Valtellina, Mello, Traona, Valfurva, Aprica and Castione Andevenno. In Cedrasco a morning dedicated to children to rediscover the ancient art of the miller the former Oberti Mill and a laboratory for preparing biscuits. After a short hike on the “owl", which leads to the community of Fusine, traditional biscuits are cooked at Viganò bakery. We celebrate in the Varese area: a Cuirone and Albizzate you can taste the Brusela cooked in the ancient ovens, a typical dessert of the area prepared for the occasion with rye flour, corn flour and American grapes.
In the province of Bergamo: in Vilminore, celebration ofthe ancient oven of Pianezza.
The flour distributed in the communities (about 400 kg) it's all local. It allows you to rediscover the small producers who, with great passion, preserve traditional crops and maintain the mountain agricultural landscape.
