European Week for Waste Reduction: the program of initiatives promoted by the Municipality of Messina

The Municipality of Messina also this year adheres to the European Week for Waste Reduction (SERR) an awareness campaign on the topic of waste reduction born as part of a European Union program dedicated to the environment called LIFE. In the week in which it takes place, the SERR has the objective of raising awareness and encouraging institutions, citizens, bodies, associations, businesses and all other stakeholders to propose, implement and disseminate concrete actions and good practices for waste reduction.

The claim of the 15th Edition, which will take place from 18 to 26 November, è “Don't Get Packed” and is dedicated to the theme of packaging on which the initiatives aimed at promoting awareness-raising actions on sustainability and above all on the importance of adopting eco-sustainable practices are concentrated, considering the environmental impact that packaging has in everyday life, also as a consequence of the increase in the sector e-commerce. In fact, the SERR represents the largest awareness campaign on waste prevention in Europe, a very topical issue, linked to the production of waste in the context of the packaging sector on which the European Commission has placed important guidelines, i.e. making all types of packaging reusable or recyclable by 2030.

Also this year this Administration – highlights the mayor Federico Basile – participates in a series of initiatives which involve our subsidiaries committed to raising awareness of schools, public bodies, businesses and citizens through actions and interventions for which – adds Basile – our sustainable development path has already been started some time ago with the Messina 2030 Project, perfectly in line with the aims of the 2023 campaign, through the involvement above all of very young people who represent the future of the City, raising their awareness of changing even small incorrect habits regarding waste management, such as reducing waste and waste, correct waste differentiation, avoiding abandonment of the same, through virtuous policies of reuse, recovery and recycling".

The municipal administration invites citizens to participate in the activities promoted to support the environment and the quality of life of each of us.

The complete program of the week:

FROM 18 TO 23 NOVEMBER – workshops on the reuse and reuse of packaging at the CSE (Socio-Educational Centre) managed by the Special Agency Messina Social City.

ON 22 AND 23 NOVEMBER – open visit to schools, exhibition on Sustainability set up by Soroptimist International from 16pm to 20pm.

FROM 18 TO 23 NOVEMBER – meetings with students of city schools, training and raising awareness on the correct disposal of packaging in separate waste collection in line with the Messina 2030 objectives managed by Messina Servizi Bene Comune.

ON NOVEMBER 24 – staging of an exhibition with the material created during the CSE workshops in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele from 16pm to 19pm.

26 November – “Tour in Factory” visit to the Ingg.AeM Schipani electromechanical plant which has become a real industrial museum where each work is born from the transformation of processing waste and materials such as packaging, from 12pm to 13pm.
