“Capitan Acciaio” arrives in Messina to talk about the value of separate waste collection.

The countdown has officially begun, from 2nd to 4th October Messina will host Capitan Acciaio, recycling superhero, which will stop in the city of the Strait to raise awareness among citizens of all ages about benefits of separate waste collection and, in particular, on the importance of recycling of steel packaging.

“Once again Messina, as an example of a virtuous municipality in terms of waste, the result of a process started in 2018 with the De Luca administration, and which has seen important awards assigned to date – highlights the mayor Federico Basile - we have joined the initiative promoted by RICREA, giving our willingness to welcome Capitan Acciaio to the City, in order to implement the objectives set within the Messina 2030 project, through synergistic work between the branch Councilors and the municipal subsidiaries, and in this case of Messinaservizi Bene Comune".

The event will offer adults and children the opportunity to discover that steel is 100% infinitely recycled, and that the correct contribution is the first step to trigger the virtuous circuit of the circular economy. During the three days Capitan Acciaio will welcome citizens in Piazza Cairoli, to concretely demonstrate how, thanks to recycling, all steel packaging such as jars, cans, drums, cans, buckets, cans, crown caps and closures, can be reborn in the form of new products. Among the many activities proposed, recreational-creative workshops for the little ones aimed at raising awareness of the different types of packaging and stimulating their imagination; quizzes and games to test adults' knowledge of good separate waste collection practices.

RECREATES, the national non-profit consortium for Recycling and Recovery of Steel Packaging part of the system CONAI, promotes similar initiatives every year in order to guide the community in the ecological challenge, through practical demonstrations on the correct disposal gesture, as it represents a step towards a sustainable future and full of possibilities, since used steel can be reborn in the form of railway tracks, bolts or street furniture.

“The stages of Capitan Acciaio along the country will also be an opportunity to make known the virtuous data on the recovery and recycling of packaging waste in Italy: in 2022 an average of 4,4 kg of steel packaging per inhabitant was collected, a result favored by the growing use of containers for domestic use, but also a confirmation that the collection and recycling system is well tested. In the last year, 418.091 tonnes of steel packaging were sent for recycling (+7,2% compared to the previous year), sufficient to build approximately 4.180 km of railway tracks, capable of ideally covering the distance between Messina and Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland”, comments the president of RICREA Domenico Rinaldini.
