Gianfranco De Benedittis' book “I Sanniti. A denied history."

The event, which is part of the calendar of scheduled events of "September in the City", organized by the Culture Department of the Municipality of Campobasso, will see as protagonists the author, Gianfranco De Benedittis, and Corradino Guacci who will talk with De Benedittis.

Samnium according to the point of view of the Samnites, a people who, for having opposed the expansionist power of Rome, was relegated to the margins of history, in the limbo of those losers who were guilty of having been the first major obstacle in the path of Rome towards the empire. This is the central theme of De Benedittis' book.

A different interpretation of the historical, epigraphic, numismatic and archaeological evidence allows us to read from a new perspective a region of the ancient Mediterranean to which historiography has attributed an identity of primitiveness and rudeness. The result is a different reading of the history of the Samnites, so far seen only in the key role they played in Rome's first steps towards the occupation of the Mediterranean.

The relationships with Rome, their successes and their defeats, the main topics of Roman-centric research, occupy marginal spaces in this volume while scope is given to the examination of the world of the Samnites in an attempt to reach an understanding of their history and their way of living from the 6th to the 3rd century. BC, that is, before the impact that the clash with the expansionist power of Rome had on their daily lives.
