Cagliari, the results of the checks on the city's Cultural Heritage: reports recovered for 400.000 euros.

The Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Cagliari present the results of the operational activity achieved in the year 2022.

The Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Cagliari, which has jurisdiction over the entire island, in synergy with the various components of the territorial force and other specialized departments, carried out 2022 checks in marine and terrestrial archaeological areas in 556, 341 checks in areas protected by landscape/monumental restrictions, 228 checks on commercial businesses in the sector, 32 inspections to ascertain the safety status of museums and 1898 checks on cultural goods offered for sale through the various digital commerce platforms.

Following this preventive activity, 65 referrals to the judicial authority followed (of which 48 for criminal association), 538 archaeological finds were recovered, for a total value of over €400.000 euros.

Among the most important operations concluded, we highlight:

  •  the recovery of four amphorae and two anchor shackles, artefacts dating back to the 5th century. BC and the 7th century. AD, of Etruscan and Roman context (imperial and late ancient age). The investigations, coordinated by the Lanusei Prosecutor's Office, made it possible to trace the illegitimate holders of the archaeological materials, among which an Etruscan amphora which represents a unique specimen in the island's archaeological panorama stands out for its particular scientific interest.
  •  the recovery of two oil on canvas paintings by the artist Tore CANU, which had been stolen. The investigations, coordinated by the Sassari Prosecutor's Office, made it possible to trace the works following investigations carried out on an e-commerce site, when a private citizen had published an advertisement proposing their sale.

 

The recovery, in an underwater environment, of archaeological material from the Roman and medieval eras, including 2 wine amphorae dating back to the XNUMXst century. BC Activity carried out, together with the Carabinieri Underwater Unit of Cagliari, in support of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia.
