HISTORY
The first Alzheimer Café was born in Leiden, the Netherlands, thanks to the psychogeriatrician Bere Miesen, who in 1997 proposed the launch of the first of these initiatives. The doctor immediately understood the importance of being able to provide Alzheimer's patients and their families with a place for exchange and discussion that prevented them from feeling alone in dealing with dementia. Precisely to respond to these needs, the Alzheimer Café was born: an accessible, de-institutionalised and informal place dedicated to people with all types of dementia, their family members and anyone interested in supporting them, with the presence and support of operators and industry professionals. Within specific spaces, meetings are organised, with a defined periodicity, aimed at both the sick person and their caregiver: targeted and stimulating activities are planned and proposed for the elderly person, while informative and informative conferences and meetings are organized for the family member , structured each time around a different theme.
