Brescia participates in the European green Capital 2024

Brescia will participate in the European Green Capital, the competition launched by the European Commission for cities with over 100 thousand inhabitants who are concretely involved to become more sustainable. The financial prize, which will be used to implement urban sustainability measures, amounts to 600 thousand euros. Participation must be completed in autumn 2021.
The evaluation process consists of two phases. In the first, 12 environmental indicators will be evaluated: air quality, noise, waste, water, nature and biodiversity, sustainable land use, green growth and eco-innovation, climate change mitigation, adaptation to climate change, sustainable urban mobility, energy performance and governance. In the submission of the application and for each indicator (with the exception of the last one), the short and long-term objectives, the strategies for achieving them, must be reported, the current situation and the measures adopted in the last 5-10 years. A group of experts will draw up the list of finalist cities (generally three) which will be able to access the second phase of the evaluation process, presenting projects and action plans to an international jury.
Winning the European Green Capital, in addition to highlighting the good work done, has many advantages: greater international media coverage, increased local pride, greater attention to environmental projects and increased foreign investments. All finalist and winning cities also have access to a network of previous finalists and winning cities to share knowledge on how to overcome key challenges.
Applying to the European Green Capital 2024 and winning means not only having confirmation that the activities carried out in the years preceding 2021 were effective but will also allow the city to complete its transformation in the direction of sustainability and resilience.
