Brescia, 31st anniversary of the "Declaration of Children's Rights"
Brescia, The 31st anniversary is an opportunity to recall the third article of the Declaration which states: "In all decisions relating to children, within the jurisdiction of public or private institutions…, the best interests of the child must be a paramount consideration. States undertake to ensure that the child has the protection and care necessary for his or her well-being... and ensure that the functioning of the institutions, services and establishments which have responsibility for children and which provide for their protection complies with the standards established by the competent authorities in particularly in the field of safety and health..."
This is an extremely topical issue, given the health emergency we are experiencing, which calls the adult world to a concrete commitment to guarantee every child the necessary protection from everything that can threaten their physical and psychological integrity. And which saw the Municipality of Brescia immediately deploying every useful resource for the cause.
The condition of well-being in fact implies the protection of the safety and health of children but at the same time it is nourished by the experiences that each child lives with others, with whom he learns to share, to know, to live. The children themselves tell us this. The image, chosen this year to accompany the poster that will be displayed in all 36 children's services in the Municipality of Brescia, is a drawing created by the "adults" of a municipal nursery school and takes a look at the way in which our children have lived and are living this time.
Children drew themselves in their homes during the lockdown, therefore in a situation of isolation which preserved their health and safety as well as that of their family members, but kept them away from their companions, with whom they could no longer share a daily life made up of play, meetings and experiences. Only an imaginary but very powerful common thread, that of emotional bonds maintained at a distance with classmates, teachers, educators, also thanks to the contributions of the Let's Stay Close platform, kept them together. When the calm returned, the same children were finally able to find themselves in their "common" home, the school.
Working to ensure these conditions of well-being for boys and girls is the commitment that Child Services, families and citizens want to take on this commemorative day. It is the daily priority of the Department of Public Education. It is a fundamental cornerstone of the city administration.
