Masterpiece of twentieth-century literature, a forerunner novel with a powerfully European, ironic and fascinating complexity, “Zeno's Conscience” celebrates one hundred years since its publication in 2023.
The monumental figure of Italo Svevo and his extraordinary psychoanalytic novel "The Conscience of Zeno", also possesses its own lively theatricality, due to the experimentation of innovative writing and due to its being dominated by the engaging, complex and very current figure of Zeno Cosini. In fact, the novel springs from the notes of the protagonist who undergoes the treatment of a psychoanalyst Doctor S trying, in that way, to resolve his pain of living, his neurosis and inability to feel “in tune” with the world and with reality. His perception of himself as inept and ill, and his obstinate - but never entirely convinced - attempts to change and heal, lead Zeno to go through existence surprisingly intertwining bourgeois everyday life with surreal episodes full of humor and truth, and with illuminations that possess a force that still shakes us.
“Zeno's Conscience” has always been played by great actors, such as Renzo Montagnani, Giulio Bosetti, Alberto Lionello who was also the protagonist of the Rai drama and, in the subsequent television edition, Johnny Dorelli. In the new staging by Paolo Valerio, Zeno will have the face of Alessandro Haber, an actor with a very powerful charisma and an absolutely personal stage instinct, who, beyond any cliché, knows how to combine irony and depth in every interpretation.
From the director's notes by Paolo Valerio: _(…) I approached this work by strongly favoring Svevo's narration: I wanted to enclose in this theatrical experience some pages that I find extraordinary, unforgettable, building another Zeno alongside the narrator. So Zeno – played by Alessandro Haber – is told and relived through the body of another actor. Zeno reveals to us the stumble, the humanity... And the character of Alessandro Haber is also intertwined with this ineptitude and sometimes, during the show, the man overlaps with the actor, to underline "the originality of life".
Zeno belongs to us, it tells about us, about our fragility, about our deceptive conscience, about the voice that speaks to us and that no one hears and that suggests life to us.
Through the scrutinizing eye of Doctor S. I tried to restore the surreal, ironic and sometimes lying dimension of Zeno, immersed in the atmosphere of his Trieste and all the extraordinary characters who live there.
An imaginary whose cerebral breath dialogues with the world of art, with psychoanalysis and where I have tried to forcefully convey the dialectic between “external and internal” in the ruthless analysis that Zeno makes of his own existence, constantly leaving a window open on his own inner world.
Thanks to all the actors, collaborators and thanks to the passion of Alessandro Haber, our show would like to be just like this, as he says Zeno Cosini: «Life is neither good nor bad, but it is original. Life seemed as new to me as if I had seen it for the first time with its fluid and solid gaseous bodies. If we told it to someone who wasn't used to it, they would be left breathless at the enormous, purposeless construction. He would have asked me: how did you put up with it? And after learning about every single detail, from those celestial bodies hanging up there to be seen but not touched, to the mystery surrounding death, he would certainly have exclaimed: Very original! »
