Latina becomes a Plastic Free Municipality. Councilor Addonizio: “It's a journey that started a long time ago”.
Il Municipality of Latina has been officially included in the list of 122 Plastic Free Municipalities 2025, an award that rewards commitment in fight against pollution from plastic, and which promotes responsible behavior in the virtuous management of urban waste.
The result was welcomed with great satisfaction by the municipal administration, which has distinguished itself for the numerous initiatives to raise awareness and fight against illegal plastic abandonment in the territory. The Municipality of Latina will receive the recognition during a ceremony to be held on March 8, 2025, at the Teatro Mediterraneo in Naples.
“The result achieved – says the Environment Councillor Franco Addonizio – makes us particularly proud, because rewards a journey that started a long time ago. In 2023, in fact, we signed a agreement with the Plastic Free association, promoting and participating in initiatives in the area aimed at reducing plastic consumption. Among the various events organized, it is worth mentioning the meetings for clean the beaches from plastic or in strategic places in the city for collect the cigarette butts of cigarettes. We are talking about events that have always been attended by hundreds of kids and that have also reached record numbers with over a ton of waste collected each time”.
The initiatives organized thanks to the synergy between the Municipality and Plastic Free were not limited to waste collection. “Last summer – continues Addonizio – aordinance to combat the increase and dispersion of plastic waste into the environment. This included, among other things, the ban on the voluntary release of balloons into the air and lanterns and the abandonment of smoking products. Finally, another of the actions undertaken by the Municipality of Latina, within the framework of the agreement signed with Plastic Free, concerns the attention to the supervision of waste disposal through the environmental inspectors of Abc and through the environmental guards through the agreement signed with the association Vigiles. This has allowed us to carefully monitor the territory by combating the incorrect disposal of waste. The recognition obtained – concludes Addonizio – makes us particularly satisfied also for the awareness that we encounter, more and more, in the boys pay attention to the waste cycle and the phenomenon of plastic dispersion in the environment and in the sea”.
