Imperia, scam against elderly people. Another arrest by the Carabinieri
The Police Forces are always very attentive in the province in preventing and repressing scams against the elderly, especially those perpetrated under the guise of the “fake Marshal” or the “fake Lawyer” who asks for money and jewelry in order to “free” a child or close relative arrested because he was responsible for a serious road accident.
In recent days the Carabinieri of the Operational Section of the Imperia Company, in collaboration with the Carabinieri Station of Genoa Centre, they arrested a forty-nine-year-old originally from Naples, already known to the police, responsible for having stolen 5000 Euro in cash and various jewels from an eighty-four-year-old man from Santo Stefano al Mare.
Numerous phone calls had been received during the morning via NUE 112 to the Operations Centre of the Provincial Command of Imperia from people, mostly elderly, who were asking for clarification regarding the arrest by the Carabinieri of a loved one involved in a serious road accident.
In the early afternoon, between Santo Stefano al Mare and Imperia, right in the areas from which the calls were coming, the Carabinieri noticed a suspicious Fiat Tipo that was wandering along the Aurelia and that was continuing its journey despite a flat tire.
Forced to stop driving near Borgo Prino due to an engine fire caused by sparks from the rim on the asphalt, the driver of the vehicle was immediately stopped while trying to drive away with a package in his hand. Searched, the man was found in possession of 5.000 euros in cash, a gold watch and numerous jewels whose provenance he was unable to explain.
That same afternoon, returning from work, the daughter of an elderly man from Santo Stefano al Mare reported to NUE112 the theft suffered by her father, who, however, had reassured himself upon seeing her return home believing that she had been released by the Carabinieri after delivering the deposit agreed with the assistant of a lawyer, who had left in a hurry an hour earlier.
The elderly man said he had received a call from a Carabinieri Marshal who informed him of a very serious accident caused by his daughter and that to avoid her arrest it would be necessary to deliver a deposit for the lawyer, whose assistant would pass by his house shortly thereafter.
Having collected around 5.000 Euros in cash and several pieces of jewellery, the elderly man reported that he had welcomed the so-called assistant into his home who, having seen the money and jewellery, took advantage of a moment of distraction and hurriedly left without even saying goodbye.
During the investigations following the arrest of the perpetrator of what was technically no longer a scam, but rather a burglary, the Carabinieri identified a room in a hotel in Genoa where the lawyer's so-called assistant had been staying for several days and, with the help of the Carabinieri of the local station, found another 3.500 Euros in cash and numerous jewels that turned out to be partly the loot from another scam carried out a few days earlier to the detriment of an eighty-eight-year-old woman from Costigliole d'Asti. The owners of other stolen goods found in the hotel room have yet to be identified.
Placed under arrest as a suspect in a crime and placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority, the forty-nine-year-old was finally placed under house arrest in the Neapolitan capital.
