Tragedy in Sampierdarena: two sisters jump from the fourth floor, one dies and the other is in serious condition.
A dramatic episode occurred this morning in the Genoa neighborhood of Sampierdarena, where two sisters of Albanian origins threw themselves into the void from the window of their apartment on the fourth floor of a building in via Cantore. One of the two women died instantly, while the other is hospitalized in serious conditions at the San Martino hospital in Genoa. In the background of the tragedy, a complex family situation and an imminent hearing for the custody of the victim's children.
The dynamics of what happened
The tragedy occurred shortly before 8 a.m. According to neighbors, the first signs were a thud and moans coming from the inner courtyard of the building. Looking out, they saw the body of a woman lying on the ground and her sister on the ledge. Despite the shouts of some residents who tried to dissuade her, the second woman also jumped into the void.
The deceased woman, Axhere Gjoni, was 32 years old. Her sister, 36, was intubated and rushed to San Martino, where she was admitted in very serious conditions. Her condition, however, is slowly improving.
A difficult family context
Behind the tragic act there seems to be a difficult family situation. Axhere Gjoni was separated from her husband, a fellow countryman she had reported in the past for psychological abuse. The man, described as rigid and of Muslim faith, had imposed numerous restrictions on his wife, including the ban on driving and the obligation to wear the veil, generating strong conflicts.
Although he had been placed under a no-approach order, that order expired in October and November, reigniting tensions. However, there is no evidence of recent physical abuse.
The situation was further complicated by the legal battle for custody of the woman's four children, aged between six years and five months. A crucial hearing was scheduled for Friday, which, according to relatives, had generated a growing state of anxiety in the victim.
The Last Hours of Axhere Gjoni
On Monday, just one day before the tragic event, the woman had posted a cryptic message on social media: “God I’m waiting for you,” almost a premonition of the desperate act that would follow.
At the time of the tragedy, the four children were at home. When the officers and rescuers arrived on the scene, the apartment was locked from the inside and it was one of the children who opened the door. The children were temporarily entrusted to social services pending a decision by the juvenile court.
The investigations and the conditions of the 36 year old
The authorities, coordinated by the public prosecutor Luca Monteverde, are investigating the psychological conditions of the two sisters and the events that led to the dramatic act.
The 36-year-old, who survived the fall, is currently under observation. After a day in intensive care, intubated and with extensive polytrauma, doctors have recorded a slight improvement in her condition.
The future of children
Now, the juvenile court will have to decide who will be entrusted with the four children of Axhere Gjoni. Meanwhile, the community of Sampierdarena is in shock over what happened, and the tragedy of the two sisters has opened a reflection on the problems related to psychological violence and support for families in fragile situations.
The story leaves behind unanswered questions and a trail of pain for a tragedy that perhaps could have been avoided.
