Genoa: Manhole gang caught, Carabinieri execute 8 precautionary measures.

I Carabinieri of the Operational Nucleus of the Genoa Center Company and the staff of Arenzano Company they executed two different custody orders against eight subjects, including two women, belonging to the group renamed “the manhole gang”.

The group is considered responsible – on the basis of preliminary investigations – for numerous thefts to the detriment of commercial establishments using the "broken", which involved the use of manholes or metal grates to break windows and gain access to the premises. During the robberies, the gang members stole money and valuables, sometimes dividing up the loot.

CRIMINI TRA GENOVA AND ARENZANO
According to preliminary reconstructions, the subjects involved are said to have committed several thefts between the months of October and December 2024, operating in groups of two or three people, but also individually. The places affected were mainly bars, restaurants and shops located in the historic center of Genoa and in the municipality of Arenzano.

The escalation of thefts had created strong alarm among shopkeepers and citizens. To stem the phenomenon, the Prosecutor of the Republic of Genoa, together with Carabinieri of the Provincial Command, has implemented a coordinated plan of action:

  • Prevention: evening and night patrols, both on foot and by vehicle, with attention to commercial activities.
  • Investigation: analysis of video surveillance images to reconstruct events and identify those responsible.

RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATIONS
The investigations led to numerous observation services in simulated clothes, which allowed the arrest in flagrante of a member of the gang and the reporting of two other individuals (not recipients of the precautionary measures).

The thefts caused significant damage to the shopkeepers, not only due to the breaking of windows and doors, but also due to the theft of approximately 15.000 euros in cash and other items such as alcoholic beverages, ordering tablets and cash registers.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
As provided by the ordinance, at the end of the operations:

  • 6 subjects they were transferred to prison.
  • 2 subjects were hit by the residence ban.

Investigations continue to ascertain further responsibilities and other possible incidents of theft linked to the gang.
