Ferrara: attempts suicide by throwing herself into the river, 90-year-old saved by the Carabinieri
The reasons that drove an elderly woman, born in 1935, to attempt suicide by throwing herself into the waters of the Po di Volano are still unclear, but if it had not been for the intervention of a patrol of the Carabinieri of the Ferrara Radiomobile Section, the epilogue would certainly have been different.
The facts date back to the morning of Sunday 19 January when the daughter of the unfortunate woman, a 57-year-old woman, noticed the body of her elderly mother immersed in the water of the Po di Volano which flows right behind the house, in the locality of Cocomaro di Cona.
The fifty-seven-year-old then rushed to the bank of the waterway and managed to grab the body of her elderly mother, still alive but now unconscious, holding it with difficulty to the shore.
The woman's action was immediately noticed by a passerby who, sensing the dramatic nature of the situation, called 112 asking for help. On site, in a few minutes the Carabinieri of the Ferrara Radiomobile Section arrived and reached the woman on the riverbed and dived into the water. The operation, made difficult by the rigid temperatures and the slipperiness of the embankment, allowed the body of the elderly woman to be brought back to the shore.
The unfortunate woman, although unconscious, was warmed with some blankets recovered from a nearby house and, once the medical personnel arrived, she was transported to the emergency room of the “Sant'Anna” hospital in Cona where she was admitted with a reserved prognosis.
