War in Ukraine: Trump's Will to Mediate Between Kiev and Moscow

US President-elect Donald Trump is planning a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to start talksaimed at ending the war in Ukraine. According to US media reports, Trump has instructed his aides to organize the contact in the coming days, with the aim of discussing a possible meeting between the two leaders in the coming months.

Trump had promised, during his election campaign, to end the conflict "within a day" of his inauguration, set for today, January 20. Now, with his return to the White House, he seems to want to keep his promise, proposing a diplomatic path to stop hostilities between Kiev and Moscow.

According to sources close to the transition team, the goal would be to push for an immediate ceasefire, which could pave the way for negotiations between the two sides. However, at the moment, Trump's team has not yet presented an official plan to the Ukrainian government.

Updates from Kiev and new Russian attacks

While Trump is working on the possibility of a dialogue with Putin, the war on the ground continues. Overnight, Russian forces launched a massive attack on Ukraine using 141 drones of various types. According to the Kiev Air Force, 93 kamikaze drones were shot down, while another 47 decoy drones fell in open areas. The strikes hit several regions, including Kiev, Kharkiv and Poltava, increasing the pressure on the country now devastated by almost three years of conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated the need for new air defense systems by Western partners, denouncing over a thousand Russian air strikes recorded in the last week alone.

Statements from Italy

Speaking on the situation, the Italian Minister of Defense reiterated that what is happening in Ukraine is "unacceptable and shameful“. In an interview, Crosetto stressed the importance of not accepting the occupation of Ukrainian territory as normal: “We cannot turn away. Thousands of bombs, rockets and explosive drones fall in Ukraine every day. This is a reality we cannot ignore.".

"Truce and peace must be accepted by the attacked, not imposed by others.“, concluded Crosetto, hoping for a peaceful solution that respects Ukrainian sovereignty.

Guerra in Ucraina: la volontà di Trump di mediare tra Kiev e MoscaTrump's Plan for Peace

With his return to the White House, Donald Trump is preparing to reopen dialogue with Moscow, hoping to start a path towards peace. However, the difficulties are many. The Russia, for its part, does not seem willing to make significant concessions, while the 'Ukraine demands security guarantees that make the ceasefire not only a possible path, but also a sustainable one.

Trump's strategy could represent an opportunity to reduce tensions, but it remains to be seen whether Putin and Zelensky will be willing to sit at the same table and, above all, whether the international community will accept the conditions of a possible agreement.
