War in Ukraine, Russia intensifies the conflict. The IAEA: risk of nuclear accident due to clashes around Kursk.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with new military and diplomatic developments on various fronts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the success of Ukraine's first test of a ballistic missile, signaling significant progress in the country's military arsenal. Additionally, Zelensky confirmed the use of F-16 fighter jets, recently supplied by the West, to repel Russian air strikes, which include missile launches and hypersonic drones. This represents an important defensive capability for Ukraine, although Zelensky stressed the need for additional aircraft to maintain parity with Russia.
In parallel, Ukraine has intensified its offensive operations on the Russian border, with fighting ongoing in the Belgorod region. Around 500 Ukrainian soldiers attacked two checkpoints, leading to violent clashes. This is part of a broader Ukrainian military strategy that includes incursions into Russia's Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops took control of a portion of territory and captured 594 Russian soldiers. These actions have sparked nuclear safety concerns, with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warning of the risk of a nuclear accident in the area as fighting approaches the Kursk nuclear power plant.
On the diplomatic front, Zelensky said he will present a peace plan to leading US presidential candidates, including Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, as well as President Biden. However, he stressed that at the moment any dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be meaningless, given his reluctance to end the war through diplomatic means. Despite this, Zelensky acknowledged that the war will inevitably end with dialogue, but only when Ukraine has consolidated a position of strength.
In response to the Ukrainian attacks, Russia continued its military operations, striking targets in several Ukrainian cities, including a hotel in Kryvyi Rih, causing deaths and injuries. Russia also moved 30.000 troops to the Kursk region, preparing to further intensify the fighting.
Finally, on the international level, the conflict also involved other global actors. China has expressed concern about Western support for Ukraine, criticizing actions that could exacerbate the conflict. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has condemned Ukraine's use of Western-supplied Storm Shadow missiles, warning that these actions risk "playing with fire", given the danger of such weapons in a of nuclear tensions.
The situation remains extremely volatile, with military escalations on both fronts and growing international concerns about the possible consequences of the conflict.
