TikTok Sold to Elon Musk? The Platform Denies Rumors Involving the Entrepreneur
The law that could lead to TikTok's ban in the United States was passed in 2024 with the aim of protecting national security. Washington fears that the app could be used by the Chinese government for espionage or information manipulation. ByteDance, however, he has always denied these accusations, and TikTok has tried to defend itself by stressing its commitment to its users' privacy.
The case is now before the Supreme Court, which will decide whether to uphold the ban.
China would undoubtedly prefer the platform to remain under the control of its parent company ByteDance. However, the scenarios appear far from encouraging, as Supreme Court justices, during the hearing on January 10, hinted thatand could confirm the law currently in force. This regulation, starting from January 20, would lead to the closure of TikTok for its approximately 170 million American users subscribers to the platform.
Elon Musk: The Right Man for TikTok?
Elon Musk could be an attractive option for the Chinese government. Not only is he one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the world, but he also has close ties to President Donald Trump, who has asked the Supreme Court to suspend the ban to find a political solution. Musk, who in the past spoke out against the TikTok ban in the United States, could use the acquisition to bolster its X platform and attract new advertisers and users. However, questions remain as to whether such a deal could actually materialize, given the complexities of relations between Beijing and Washington.
The digital case that puts relationships to the test
The TikTok affair is just one of many issues complicating relations between China and the United States. For Beijing, maintaining control over the app is a question of technological sovereignty, while for Washington it is a question of national security. The ban, which will take effect on January 19 if ByteDance does not find a buyer, could have significant repercussions not only for the technology industry, but also for diplomatic relations between the two countries.
TikTok denies
Even though they arrived just a few hours ago, TikTok official denials, believing that the hypothesis of a sale to Elon Musk is “pure fiction“, the fact continues to be a matter of debate. While this option could represent a way out to avoid the ban, it would also raise questions about the feasibility of the agreement. The fate of TikTok in the United States therefore hangs by a thread, while the two states prepare for a clash that could mark a new chapter in their relations.
