Poland, Morawiecki: "we will organize a referendum so that Poles can have their say on irregular immigration"

Giorgia Meloni flew to Warsaw, Poland, where she met Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. A bilateral agreement that comes a few days after a European Council in which both Poland and Hungary blocked the new agreement on migrants, supported instead by Italy. The Prime Minister, politically allied with the sovereignists, therefore found herself in an uncomfortable position to say the least.

But now, in a press conference with Morawiecki, he assures: “I could never accuse those who defend national interests. With Poland there is no division, let's work together on how to stop illegal immigration."

And yet: “Whoever thinks there is division with Morawiecki is deluding himself. I admire the strength with which he defends Poland's interests. We have the same goals. Europe wants to address the issue by focusing on the management of migration once it arrives on our continent. But the only way is to stop illegal immigration before it gets to us. Morawiecki and I agree, I understand the difficulty in accepting relocation systems from countries that are taking on the burden of welcoming Ukrainian refugees and often without adequate European recognition".

A line also reiterated by the Polish Prime Minister.

“The relations between Italy and Poland not only have a long history of collaboration and friendship, but also a modernity based strongly on the common understanding of the reality of the problems. I am very, very happy because when we talk during the European Councils, sometimes we just exchange a look and understand that we have a common understanding of Europe", commented.
To then announce a referendum on immigration. “We will organize a referendum so that Poles can have their say on irregular immigration, on who is the master: the EU or a sovereign country. The EU's priority should be the security of the countries, if we do not control irregular migration we risk seeing on our streets what we now see in other member states".

On the relocation of migrants, to ensure that the migratory phenomenon and reception do not only burden the countries of first arrival, Morawiecki he hasn't changed his mind: “We do not accept irregular immigration and we do not accept payment obligations for not accepting relocations. Giorgia understands this. Who is master of their country? The European Commission that places constraints on you, or the sovereign country?”, he said, specifying that all relocations, as agreed in 2018, must be voluntary.

On the referendum regarding relocations Meloni limited herself to commenting: “I have respect for the idea of questioning one's own citizens on a sensitive matter for the safety of one's own citizens.”
