Meloni at the UN: “Reform the Security Council for a Fair Multilateralism”.

During her speech at the Summit of the Future, within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed issues of global relevance, underlining the importance of a UN reform that respects the principles of equality and representation.

Meloni began by denouncing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which she called an unacceptable act against a sovereign nation. She highlighted how this conflict not only threatens the stability of Europe, but also that of international security, making the world balance increasingly precarious.

In her speech, Meloni also touched on the issues of global crises, stating that we live in a time of crisis, but that crises, while being a source of difficulties, also bring with them opportunities. She cited the etymology of the word “crisis”, deriving from the Greek “krisis”, which means choice and decision. According to the prime minister, crises force us to reflect on our choices, to take sides and not to hesitate. She then stated that no country can address the complex and interconnected challenges of our time alone, such as climate change, social and economic inequalities, humanitarian and health crises, and armed conflicts.

Regarding the reform of the UN Security Council, Meloni said that any changes must be based on the principles of equality, democracy and representation. She stressed that the reform must not create a hierarchy between nations, stating: “We are not interested in creating new hierarchies and we do not believe that there are first-class and second-class nations.” According to the prime minister, every nation has its own history and peculiarities, but all citizens have equal rights, since they are born free and equal.

In this context, Meloni also presented the “Mattei Plan,” an Italian initiative aimed at promoting investments in Africa. This plan aims to establish fair and respectful cooperation with African countries, avoiding paternalistic or predatory approaches. She described the plan as an opportunity to build stability and development in a continent that is often underestimated.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that young Africans have the right to remain in their countries, thus avoiding forced migration.

Meloni urged the international community to view current crises as an opportunity to renew multilateralism and strengthen the UN as a representative institution. The prime minister reiterated Italy's firm belief in the importance of open and constructive dialogue between nations, which respects the rights of all peoples and promotes a future of peace and cooperation.
