Inauguration Day 2025: Trump to be sworn in as 47th president, Italy present with Giorgia Meloni

Monday, January 20th will be a historic day for the United States: Donald Trump will return to lead the nation as the 47th president, accompanied by solemn ceremonies and great expectations. Among the international guests who will participate there is also the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, expected in Washington to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the president-elect. However, the polar cold that will hit the American capital has forced a change in the traditional program of theopening day.

Indoor Swearing-In: A Rare Event in American History

With temperatures forecast to be around -6 degrees, accompanied by a freezing wind, the the ceremony will be held exceptionally indoors, in the Capitol Rotunda. A decision that recalls the one taken in 1985, when Ronald Reagan had to move his swearing-in due to similar weather conditions.I don't want to see people hurt in any way.,” Trump said on Truth Social, justifying his decision to avoid the Capitol’s West Steps, where the event traditionally takes place.

Alternative plans and guests from all over the world

Despite the logistical limitations imposed by the weather conditions, a ceremony full of significant moments is expected. Among the guests, the following stand out: world leaders, like Argentine President Javier Milei, and technology industry personalities, as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos. Tuttavia, some notable absentees will make the news: Chinese President Xi Jinping declined the invitation, as did Michelle Obama, who will not accompany her husband. To accommodate as many supporters as possible, a live broadcast was arranged at the Capital One Arena, which will also host the inaugural parade.

The traditional inauguration day

Inauguration Day will follow a precise protocol, rooted in American tradition. After a morning prayer at St. John's Episcopal Church, Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance will travel to the White House for a symbolic meeting with outgoing President Joe Biden. The historic parade will then take the new occupants of the Capitol to the Rotunda, where they will be officially sworn in.

At 12:00 p.m., Trump will take the oath of office on the family Bible and that of Abraham Lincoln, in a ceremony presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. This will be followed by the inaugural address, a key moment for the new president, eagerly awaited by both the media and international observers. Afterwards, Trump will sign the first official documents in the President's Room and attend the inaugural luncheon at the National Statuary Hall, an exclusive event with fine dining and a limited list of guests.

Record investment for the event

This year's ceremony will also be one of the most expensive in American history. Trump's organizing committee has collected approximately 170 million dollars, clearly exceeding the 107 million collected in 2017 for the first settlement. Among the Major backers include big names in the technology sector, including Apple's Tim Cook and OpenAI's Sam Altman.

An era that reopens

With his return to the White House, Trump promises to inaugurate a new political season, between continuity with the past and new challenges. The events of January 6, 2021, when his supporters stormed the Capitol, remain alive in the memory of the American population, giving this Inauguration Day an even greater symbolic significance. Prime Minister Meloni, present at the ceremony, will represent Italy in a historic moment for the transatlantic relations.
