G20: Giorgia Meloni meets Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

A bilateral meeting between Italy and the United Kingdom before the forum with world leaders.

In a note, Palazzo Chigi communicates that, the day before the start of the G20, the leaders' forum to be held on 9 and 10 September in India, the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, had a long and cordial meeting with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, focused on the preparation of the G20 Summit tomorrow and the day after, on the priority of continued support for Ukraine with the commitment to provide security guarantees and on the urgency of ensuring an effective and comprehensive response to main challenges of our societies, including that of artificial intelligence. The two Heads of Government also agreed on the need to look at the joint efforts necessary for the development of Africa as a shared opportunity, also with respect to the inhumane trafficking of people that speculates on migratory flows.

The Prime Minister, on an official visit from the English minister, in a meeting that lasted two hours, signed a memorandum on defense and migrants, with joint initiatives also on climate, energy and economy.
The objective of the trip is to define relations, to continue the work in which Italy and the United Kingdom are similar on many issues and in particular in matters of defense and support for Ukraine.
The two leaders made short statements in front of the cameras. “It's a new beginning” in relations between Italy and the United Kingdom “I am very happy to be here, I am convinced that we can do a good job together”, added the prime minister.
Meloni has released statements regarding the issue of migrants: “The fight against traffickers and illegal immigration is something that the two governments are doing very well: I am following your work, I absolutely agree with your work”, he declared, addressing the English minister.
“We are nations that, as you said, have a strong partnership but that can do even more. On major issues we are on the same side, such as defense and Ukraine. If we do not fight alongside Ukraine, the force of law will no longer win, but the strongest will prevail over law.". “The values ​​of the United Kingdom and Italy are aligned”Said Sunak.
The declarations also recalled the military collaboration in Global Combat Air Program.
In this regard they stated that there is “a lot to discuss today” regarding the relationship between the two countries on this hot topic. Sunak also expressed a positive opinion on the economic management of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, defining it “very attentive and capable of bringing stability to Italy in times of uncertainty”.
