Spain, Pedro Sanchez asks for confidence in the birth of the new Spanish government
The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, has asked for a vote of confidence in the birth of the new Spanish government. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Madrid, Barcelona, Andalusia and Bilbao in protest.
Pedro Sanchez, of the Socialist Party, was appointed by the king to form the new government after the leader of the People's Party, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, obtained the majority.
Currently Pedro Sanchez counts 179 votes in favour, precisely 3 more than the absolute majority.
The request for a vote of confidence for the birth of the new government created an opportunity both for a discussion with Feijoo on the amnesty for the Catalan independentists and for the intervention of the nationalist deputies.
Pedro Sanchez has released some statements clarifying his position "We will grant amnesty, because the circumstances are what they are: we have to make a virtue of necessity in the name of Spain, of the national interest, to defend social progress, to overcome the fractures of the past. The problem of the PP and Vox is not the amnesty but that they did not accept the election result,” said the Spanish Prime Minister, “It is a completely legal and constitutional measure like there have been many in Europe. I ask the PP to have a sense of responsibility. Distance yourself from Vox's Trumpism."
Regarding the demonstrations taking place in the square, Pedro Sanchez stated “There were many demonstrations called by the PP and Vox: I want to express total respect towards those who protested in a peaceful, I underline, peaceful way. Demonstrating is a fundamental right provided for by the Constitution. Here today and tomorrow we will listen, through their representatives, the voice of the 25 million voters who voted for months as required by our Constitution".
