The new package envisaged by the EU
La European Commission announced today, January 16, a new Aid package for Gaza worth 120 million euros. This initiative is part of the European Union's ongoing commitment to support Palestinians in need, in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The package represents a concrete response to the worsening living conditions in the Gaza Strip, where millions of people are in extremely vulnerable conditions.
The overall commitment of 45 million euros
With the new allocation, theoverall humanitarian assistance of the EU in Gaza rwill add a total of more than 450 million euros from 2023. The aid adds to efforts already underway, including the European Humanitarian Air Bridge, that transported over 3.800 tons of essential supplies, such as food, medicines, tents and other essential goods for the population.
The critical situation and the continuous immediate aid
According to the spokeswoman of the European Commission Eva Hrncirova, “The situation in Gaza is catastrophic, and Palestinians are in urgent need of food, medical supplies, tents and other protection”
The aid package includes targeted interventions to address the main emergencies:
- Food assistance to combat food insecurity and malnutrition.
- Access to water and sanitation to improve the health conditions of the population.
- Safe accommodation for displaced people.
- Protection of vulnerable populations
- Health support to ensure the functioning of medical facilities and the supply of essential materials and medicines.
Ursula von der Leyen's statement
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the ceasefire agreement, stressing in a statement that “The ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages offer hope that the region desperately needs. However, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains grim. Europe will continue to support the Palestinians with 120 million euros in aid in 2025, along with tons of in-kind aid.".
THEEuropean Union to work closely with United Nations agencies and other partner humanitarian organizations for ensure that aid is distributed rapidly and effectively to those who need it most. Overall, EU humanitarian assistance to third countries in 2025 will reach €1,9 billion, demonstrating thecommunity commitment towards the most vulnerable populations.
