“It took three thousand years to get here”With these words, Donald Trump concluded the signing of the historic Middle East peace agreement. In the packed hall of the Sharm el-Sheikh International Conference Center, over twenty international leaders stood to applaud. Among them was Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whom the American president publicly thanked: "She's doing an excellent job."
On the stage, the large sign "Peace 2025" frames the scene. A hope that, in Meloni's words, represents a concrete possibility: “The road is still long, but the perspective remains that of two states.”The Prime Minister reiterated that Italy will recognize the Palestinian state when the conditions set by Parliament are met.
The summit in Egypt marks one of the highest moments in the American president's international career. After the stop in Israel, where he spoke before the Knesset, Trump reached Sharm el-Sheikh dominating the scene alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. With them, the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, central protagonists of the negotiations that led to the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the release of the last hostages.
Trump was the first to sign. “This is an incredible day for the world and for the Middle East.”, he declared, defining the agreement is "very comprehensive" and "destined to work". “It is the day that people have prayed for for millennia,” he added. “World War III will not break out in the Middle East, and hopefully it never will.”
The American president then thanked "the Arab and Muslim nations who helped make this incredible breakthrough possible."
The role of Italy
The signing of the agreement marks the beginning of what Trump has called "Phase 2 of Gaza," and Italy intends to play a leading role. Meloni defined the “historic” day and emphasized that our country is ready to do its part: “Humanitarian aid, healthcare, security, and reconstruction will be the cornerstones of our commitment.”
Rome will continue with the “Food for Gaza” initiative, will continue the evacuation of injured children and will bring medical facilities directly to the Strip. On the security front, Meloni recalled that "the Carabinieri have been training the Palestinian police in Jericho for years." and that Italy participate in the European mission in Rafah.
But the Prime Minister looks further: "We are ready to strengthen the military presence in Gaza, up to evaluate a UN-mandated stabilization force”A step that will require a vote in Parliament, with the hope of a unanimous decision. "It wouldn't be an interposition mission," he specified, "but rather a ceasefire monitoring mission."
During the bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, Meloni and al-Sisi also spoke about cooperation, energy and the Mattei Plan, but also of the need to relaunch a "political process towards the two-state solution"The Egyptian president has reiterated the priority of "creating the conditions for the rapid reconstruction of the Strip and the birth of an independent Palestinian state."
Following this, a meeting with key international leaders, including Macron, Merz, Erdogan, Al Thani, Starmer and Abdullah II, took place. placed the urgency of expanding humanitarian access and ensuring immediate assistance to the civilian population at the center.
In the group photo of the summit, where Meloni is the only woman among the heads of state and government, stands out the absence of Benjamin Netanyahu.
