The Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon. Antonio Tajani, the Chief of Defense Staff, Adm. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, and the General Commander of the Carabinieri, Army Corps General Teo Luzi they have opened Thursday 24 November at the Farnesina the meeting of the high-level Interministerial Committee which has functions of political control and strategic direction on the European Gendarmerie Force and political-military coordination between member countries.
“The European Gendarmerie Force is an essential crisis management tool – declared Tajani – and provides indispensable capabilities, especially in the context of the European Union's civilian missions. A “concrete example”, Tajani continued, “It was deployed within the framework of EULEX Kosovo, led by Italy. Equally strategic is EuroGendFor's contribution to the EU mission in Libya, to combat migrant trafficking". Like Italy, the Minister recalled, “we attach great importance to the southern front: North Africa, the Horn of Africa and the Sahel require our concrete commitment to the development of the continent, and support for the stability of those countries, also provided through EuroGendFor, is crucial”. In thanking theArms of the Carabinieri for the results achieved during the Italian presidency of EuroGendFor which ends today, the Vice Prime Minister underlined the close link between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Carabinieri, which guarantees the security of our Embassies around the world.

The General Commander of the Carabinieri Luzi pointed out how “the presence of EuroGendFor is strengthened today, thanks to an ever-increasing relevance in the European Union missions, especially in the Western Balkans – in Bosnia and Kosovo – where it deploys the largest contingent”.
EuroGendFor is a crisis management tool available to International Organizations, made up of military police forces of the Member States of the European Union. It currently includes the Italian Carabinieri, the Spanish Civil Guard, the French National Gendarmerie, the Portuguese Guardia Nacional Republicana, the Dutch Marechaussée, the Polish Military Gendarmerie and the Romanian Gendarmerie, as well as Lithuania as a partner and Turkey as an observer .
The Committee is chaired on an annual basis by a member state. For theItaly, who assumed the Presidency on 15 December 2022 and will return to chair the Committee in 2030, attended by the Defense General Staff, the Commander General of the Carabinieri and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, represented by the Deputy Director General of Political and Security Affairs.
During today's meeting the objectives achieved by the Italian Presidency, including the valorisation of the multinational structures of the Force, with particular reference to the reserve police force deployed as part of the Eulex mission in Kosovo, Italian-led. Furthermore, the handover took place between the outgoing Italian Presidency and the Spanish Civil Guard. Finally, the admission of the Republic of Moldova as an observer was made official.
