I-CAN Project: International Cooperation Against the 'Ndrangheta Presented in Romania

A high-level institutional meeting took place on December 3 in Romania between representatives of:

SELEC – Southeast European Law Enforcement Center,

Central Directorate of the Criminal Police,
-
Romanian Anti-Mafia Directorate.
The meeting had as its central theme the presentation of the results and progress of the I-CAN Project (INTERPOL Cooperation Against 'Ndrangheta), an international initiative coordinated by Italy to counter the presence and global expansion of the Calabrian criminal organization.

Focal point: the 'Ndrangheta's ability to infiltrate foreign economic systems
The Italian Project Leader illustrated to the Romanian partners how the 'Ndrangheta represents one of the most dangerous transnational criminal organizations, capable of infiltrating the international economic fabric, exploiting commercial and financial networks in various countries, and building operational structures abroad with a high risk of establishing themselves in Romania as well.
The Romanian delegation showed particular interest in the financial investigations in progress, strengthened by the use of INTERPOL Silver Notices, tools dedicated to combating economic and financial crimes connected to the activities of the 'Ndrangheta.

Operational cases and investigative cooperation
During the meeting, important issues were discussed. operational cases realized thanks to the collaboration between: Service for International Police Cooperation (SCIP), Central Directorate of Criminal Police, and Romanian investigative authorities.
These cases represent a concrete example of the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation and the importance of the support offered by INTERPOL in coordinated investigative activity.
Towards Strengthening Cooperation: Romania's Path to the I-CAN Project
Police cooperation between Italy and Romania, consolidated over the years through significant operational results, was further strengthened by this meeting.
Both delegations expressed strong interest in Romania's entry as the 25th country in the I-CAN Project, a step that would contribute to: intensifying the international fight against the 'Ndrangheta, improving investigative coordination, expanding the global monitoring and analysis network, and protecting the economic systems of European countries from criminal infiltration.
