Human Rights Day, Tajani: "The protection of fundamental freedoms remains a priority for Italy."
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, which recalls the adoption of the Universal Declaration of 1948, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani reiterated that the promotion and protection of fundamental rights continue to represent a an indispensable pillar of Italy's international action.
A message that takes on particular relevance in the current global context, marked by conflicts, humanitarian crises, and growing violations of fundamental freedoms.
Italy in the UN Council: an international recognition
This year's anniversary was enriched by the Italy's recent election as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for three-year period 2026–2028. A result that is read as concrete recognition of the role played by our country in the defense of the dignity of the person and in the ability to dialogue and mediation which characterizes Italian diplomacy.
Italy's membership in the Council strengthens its influence in the main multilateral forums dedicated to the protection of fundamental rights.
The Farnesina's priorities on the international level
In his speech, Minister Tajani recalled the traditional guidelines of Italian commitment, which will continue to guide action in the UN Council. Among these:

universal abolition of the death penalty

promoting gender equality

protection of the rights of children and vulnerable people

defense of freedom of expression and religion

fight against all forms of discrimination
These are issues that have been at the core of Italian action at the multilateral level for years.
A commitment that looks to the future
On all these fronts, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to work with determination together with the international partners, with the aim of ensuring that human rights and dignity do not remain abstract principles, but find concrete application everywhere in the world.
International Human Rights Day thus becomes not only a moment of remembrance, but also of renewed political and diplomatic commitment.
