La Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses deep concern due to the worsening situation in Sudan, following the fall of El Fasher, in North Darfur, which occurred last year 26 October, after a siege that lasted over 18 months.
According to information from the area, the city would have passed under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and in the last few hours they would have emerged reports of serious atrocities, summary executions e violence against civilians.
“The capture of El Fasher represents a dramatic worsening of the already devastating civil war in Sudan, with potentially catastrophic humanitarian consequences,” reads the note from the Farnesina.
Italy, the statement continues, launches an appeal to all parties involved in the conflict so that let hostilities cease immediately, in Darfur and throughout the Sudan, and respect the principles of the international humanitarian law and human rights.
The priority, he reiterates, Foreign Ministry, must be the protection of civilians , ensuring safe access for humanitarian organizations to the affected areas.
Despite the difficulties linked to the conflict, Italy underlines that never having abandoned the Sudanese population, continuing to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians, both within the country, both in Neighboring countries that welcome refugees.
