Russia, Africa, war in Ukraine and the Mediterranean. These are the main focuses of the telephone conversation between Giorgia Meloni and Joe Biden. In a note from Palazzo Chigi we read that the conversation focused on support for Kiev, still involved in the conflict against Moscow, and, obviously, the latest events that have shaken the Kremlin. We are talking about the rebellion of the head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, against the Russian leadership. A revolt which ended in a sort of stalemate following an agreement endorsed by Aleksandr Lukashenko's Belarus, but which leaves numerous questions pending on the future of the balance within the Russian Federation.
According to reports, the US president asked the Italian prime minister for the scenario on Italy's commitment in the Mediterranean, as well as on collaboration with the European Union for stability in Africa.

The theme is particularly relevant. And not only because of the immigration dossier, but also and above all for the situation within many countries, where Moscow, through Wagner, and China can boast deep-rooted experience as well as particularly solid ties.

Great attention was then dedicated to the framework of crisis in Russia and its impact linked to the presence of the Wagner group in Africa. From this point of view, Washington is trying to leverage all its partners, primarily European ones, including Italy to balance the Sino-Russian advance. With Beijing focused on the economic aspects and energy resources of the Dark Continent, and Prigozhin's mercenaries active in the military sector and, in part, the extraction of precious metals and rare earths.

Biden spoke with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “as part of close collaboration with allies and partners following the recent events in Russia”, states the White House reporting the telephone conversation. “The two leaders affirmed their support for Ukraine”, they discussed each other in view of the next one “NATO summit, 11 and 12 July, and discussed recent developments in North Africa”.

During the phone call, Joe Biden invited the Italian prime minister to Washington in July, the White House said while reporting the conversation between the two.
