Presentation of new European Commission postponed: tensions expected in Strasbourg.

The presentation of the new European Commission has been postponed to September 17 in Strasbourg. The European Socialists and the PD are calling for prominent roles for Italy and a political balance in the distribution of portfolios.

The presentation of the new European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has been postponed from 11 to 17 September and will be held in Strasbourg. The decision was announced by the spokesperson of the European Parliament, Delphine Colard, on X. The new date was set to ensure an adequate discussion on the structure and portfolios of the Commission, with particular attention to the political balance between the groups represented.

The secretary of the Partito Democratico (PD), Elly Schlein, reiterated the importance of assigning Italy a significant portfolio, stressing that the country is one of the founders of the European Union. Schlein said that the proposal of the new Commission must reflect the majority that voted for von der Leyen in the European Parliament and remain consistent with the program she presented when she took office.

European Socialists have set out their expectations for the composition of the new Commission, including a strengthened Spitzenkandidat process, gender balance, a focus on social rights, and a fair distribution of executive vice-president positions that reflects the majority of the European Parliament. The Socialist group has warned that it will be difficult to support the new commissioners if these conditions are not met.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party in the European Parliament will evaluate Raffaele Fitto's candidacy for the position of executive vice-president without prejudice, but requires that his presentation shows signs of Europeanism. The head of the PD delegation, Nicola Zingaretti, confirmed that the party wants a prominent role for Italy and reiterated that the European Socialists ask for coherence with von der Leyen's program.

The situation remains fluid, with the need to balance different political sensitivities within the MEPs, and with the presentation postponed in Strasbourg it will be crucial to see whether the demands of the various political groups will be met.
