ROMA — Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at Palazzo Chigi today, in a highly political and diplomatic meeting that is part of international initiatives for the stabilization of the Middle East. The meeting touched on the most pressing issues of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, from consolidating the ceasefire to the reconstruction of Gaza, and the need for a credible political process that will reopen the prospect of a two-state solution.

The meeting comes at a delicate stage of the conflict, as the international community attempts to build a lasting truce and define a path forward that guarantees security, governance, and reconstruction.

Focus on ceasefire and stabilization: Meloni recalls the Trump Plan and the exclusion of Hamas from the political future.

During the meeting, Giorgia Meloni reiterated Italy's position on the need to consolidate the ceasefire, an essential step to pave the way for stabilizing the Gaza Strip and initiating structured reconstruction efforts.

Palazzo Chigi has underlined that, for Italy, the main way remains the full implementation of the Peace Plan proposed by former President Donald Trump, which envisages a comprehensive path for Palestinian security and governance. Central to the vision shared by the Prime Minister is the disarmament of Hamas, defined as incompatible with the political future of the Palestinian people.

The message is clear: any stabilization process must include legitimate actors, reformed institutions, and security guarantees that enable sustainable reconstruction.

Rome becomes a "humanitarian bridge" for Gaza: Meloni praises Italy's commitment

The Prime Minister has placed great emphasis on the humanitarian role played by Italy since the beginning of the crisis, an intervention that has taken various operational forms:

  • “Food for Gaza”, a food support program dedicated to families affected by the conflict;
  • medical evacuations, which ensured safe transfers of the most seriously injured to equipped healthcare facilities;
  • “university corridor”, an initiative that allows Palestinian students in vulnerable conditions to continue their academic career in Italy;
  • training of the Palestinian police forces, with paths aimed at strengthening internal security and governance capabilities;
  • support for Palestinian Authority reform program, considered essential for future stability.

Meloni emphasized that Italy is not limiting its intervention to emergency measures, but is actively participating in building institutional capacity, which is considered crucial for a future solid Palestinian state.

Towards an International Conference on Gaza: Rome prepares an aid and reconstruction package

In the final part of the meeting, the two leaders reiterated the need to work towards a lasting political solution, which maintains the two-state perspective as the only possible horizon for a stable peace.

Meloni confirmed that the Italian Government is finalizing a humanitarian aid package and reconstruction efforts, calibrated to the priorities indicated by the Palestinian Authority. This package will be presented to the International Conference on Gaza that Egypt intends to convene in the coming weeks.

Italian support aims to combine immediate interventions with structural solutions, within a framework that gives diplomacy a central role in containing tensions and resuming dialogue.

Italy, a protagonist in crisis diplomacy

The Meloni-Abbas meeting confirms Italy's desire to be an active player in international processes related to the Middle East, combining humanitarian commitment, institutional support, and diplomatic initiative.

In a context marked by instability and political fragility, Palazzo Chigi claims a pragmatic mediation role, aimed at protecting the civilian population, promoting reforms, and consolidating the minimum conditions for a lasting peace based on the coexistence of two states.
