EU: 20 million euros to Egypt to tackle this new refugee crisis
Yesterday -18 June 2023- around sixty people, including many belonging to the Amnesty International groups of the Alpes-Maritimes and Liguria, but also to other associations, took part in a late afternoon demonstration organized by Amnesty at border crossing of Ponte San Ludovico, in Ventimiglia, on the occasion of the World Refugee Day.
“We ask that Italy and Europe adopt responsible policies that respect human rights for the management of migrants, refugees and applicants for international protection” - Said Francesca Bisiani, responsible for Amnesty Liguria – “These have been terrible months, in a context that has already been particularly serious for several years and which can no longer even be defined as an emergency, given how constant and serious it has become over time”.
Egypt is playing an important role as a host country and is showing generosity towards Sudanese refugees fleeing the country.
“The European Union will therefore provide as an immediate response an additional 20 million euros to support Egypt in addressing this new refugee crisis”. The EU High Representative announced it on Twitter Josep Borrell visits Cairo.
“The EU-Egypt partnership is of strategic importance for us – adds Borrell –. With Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry we discussed further broadening and deepening our cooperation, including on energy, trade, human rights and migration, as well as regional issues such as the MEPP (the Middle East peace process), Syria and the waters of the Nile River." Borrell specifies that the Egyptian Foreign Minister also spoke about “the war against Ukraine and its negative consequences for the whole world, including Egypt. The current food crisis is a direct consequence of Putin's war, as a large part of Egypt's grain imports come from Ukraine. We need a just and equitable peace for Ukraine.”
