China accuses the United States of a "double standard" on tariffs: "Threatening is not the right approach to interacting with China."
Beijing responds to Trump's provocations, reigniting the trade war between China and the United States. After Donald Trump's announcement of new 100% tariffs Regarding Chinese imports and further export controls on "critical software", Beijing reacts harshly: “A typical example of double standards”, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in an official statement released today.
Trump on Friday accused China of imposing "extremely aggressive" restrictions to rare earth exports, crucial materials for the production of smartphones, electric vehicles, military equipment, and renewable energy technologies. The former president also threatened to cancel a scheduled meeting with Xi Jinping.
Beijing's response
“Threatening high tariffs at every opportunity is not the right approach to interacting with China.”, the ministry said in an online statement, stressing that the United States has already intensified economic measures against Beijing since September.
Rare earths, of which China dominates the production and processing, have been a key point in trade relations between the two superpowers. Beijing had announced on Thursday new export controls on technologies related to the extraction and processing of critical minerals, a move interpreted by Washington as a further signal of closure.
On Truth Social, Trump accused Beijing of wanting to "hold the world hostage" through its control of rare earths. "We will not allow this to happen," he added, announcing that the new tariffs will take effect on November 1st.
