SkyArte: “Masterpiece – art revealed” arrives to discover the most famous paintings in the world.
I Netherlands they are known worldwide for having given birth to some of the greatest painters in the history of art, who have created unparalleled masterpieces. There series in seven episodes Masterpiece – The art revealed, exclusive on Sky Arte from 6 July, every Thursday at 21.15pm – streaming only on NOW and also available on demand – try to discover the secret that is hidden behind each of these great works, entrusting the task of reproducing them to a team of experts, getting as close as possible to the technique of the original. Protagonists of the series are seven masterpieces: Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Mondrian's Victory Boogie Woogie, Van Gogh's Self-Portrait, Rembrandt's Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem, Prins Hendrikkade's View and Monet's Kromme Waal, Turner's Clouds and Water and finally Bruegel's Tower of Babel.
6 July, 21.15pm – Masterpiece – Art revealed – Vermeer
Vermeer's “Girl with a Pearl Earring” has been defined by the public as the most iconic painting of the Netherlands, so much so that it has been called the “Mona Lisa of the Netherlands”. The team will try to reveal its secrets by recreating the painting with all of today's technology and the knowledge of the past to understand the mysterious techniques used to make the canvas so luminous.
13 July, 21.15pm – Masterpiece – The art revealed – Mondrian
Mondrian, one of the greatest innovators of modern art, took his first steps as a landscape painter, later becoming one of the greatest exponents of an artistic movement that seeks a representation of the world beyond the visible in abstract works. His absolute masterpiece is “Victory Boogie Woogie,” the painting he worked on in New York until his death in 1944.
20 July, 21.15pm – Masterpiece – Art revealed – Van Gogh
At the age of 27 Vincent van Gogh decided to become a full-time artist. In the following ten years and until his death he created more than 900 paintings, inspiring, through his characteristic use of color and compositions, generations of artists after him. By examining his works, especially the Self-Portrait of Him, the Masterpiece team will reach several surprising discoveries.
27 July, 21.15pm – Masterpiece – Art revealed – Rembrandt
Rembrandt van Rijn created the painting “Jeremiah Laments the Destruction of Jerusalem” at the age of 24. It is an incredibly complex painting in terms of technique, composition and the rendering of different materials such as velvet, metal, red coral and rock. Michel van de Laar, from the Masterpiece team, restores Rembrandt's work, bringing to light a special detail that had long remained hidden in the paint: a hair of Rembrandt's. And it's not just any hair: exciting research leads to a descendant of Rembrandt.
3 August, 21.15pm – Masterpiece – Art revealed – Monet
Monet is considered among the founders of Impressionism, the art form that focuses on the experience of the moment, modern life and open-air painting. The painting “View of Prins Hendrikkade and Kromme Waal”, created during one of his numerous stays in the Netherlands, completes his impressionist research. The team visits Monet's old home and studio in Giverny, France, and returns with material useful for the reconstruction.
10 August, 21.15pm – Masterpiece – The art revealed – Turner
In 1840 Turner painted the masterpiece “Clouds and Water”. Charlotte, from the Masterpiece team, tries to understand his casual style, with thick spots. Searching for answers about the techniques used by the artist, Masterpiece visits Tate Britain and gathers on a windy English cliff. An episode in which an iron, a stone of Margate chalk and a jar of beeswax play a starring role.
17 August, 21.15pm – Masterpiece – Art revealed – Bruegel
For 5 years the Masterpiece team was asked to make a reproduction of the famous work “The Tower of Babel” by Pieter Bruegel; and finally the team takes up the challenge by completing the job, thanks to their extreme perseverance.
