Rome receives 3D model of asteroid 'Campidoglio'.
Officially donated to the city of Rome 3D model of the asteroid named “Campidoglio”. The award was presented at the opening of today's session of the Capitoline Assembly. Present were scholars Mario Di Sora and Franco Mallia, director and vice-director of the Campo Catino Astronomical Observatory, who discovered the asteroid (215970) on August 28, 2005 and chose to dedicate it to the Capitoline Hill of the Eternal City.
"We are grateful to the Campo Catino Observatory and its representatives, Mario Di Sora and Franco Mallia, for this gift. The model of the asteroid 'Campidoglio' is a symbol of how our city is an example in promoting culture and respect for the environment and has been a pioneer in policies for the reduction of light pollution", he claims the president of the Capitoline Assembly Svetlana Celli.
The asteroid (215970) Campidoglio was discovered at the Campo Catino Astronomical Observatory, using a remotely controlled telescope in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. Located in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, it has a diameter of about 2,121 km and orbits the Sun in just over four and a half Earth years. The dedication was chosen in recognition of the commitment to reducing light pollution, which makes Rome the first city in the world to have adopted specific policies for the protection of the night sky.
