Lombardy Region. “InnovaCultura” Call: 6 million euros allocated to finance 49 projects dedicated to cultural digitalization.

From podcasts to artificial intelligence, through escape rooms to augmented reality. These are some of the projects that will be implemented by leading institutions in the Milanese cultural scene, including La Scala, the Triennale, the University of Milano, the Bagatti Valsecchi Foundation and the MEET Digital Culture Center, thanks to the InnovaCultura call. Specifically to Milano 19 projects were funded for a total of almost 2 million euros.

Thanks to a total funding of 6 million, coming from European funds PR-FESR 2021-2027, the Lombardy Region has launched a series of initiatives aimed at promoting new technological skills in museums, in ecomuseums, UNESCO sites, archaeological parks, libraries and historical archives of the region. In total on the territory 49 projects were funded.

“InnovaCultura – says the regional councillor for Culture, Francesca Caruso – is the demonstration that innovation and culture can walk together. This call allows our cultural institutions to make a qualitative leap, making heritage even more accessible. An unprecedented tool to enhance our cultural sites and project them into the future”.

Among the most significant projects there is “The Orio Vergani Archive. Traces of a Multifaceted Journalist”, developed by the APICE Centre of the University of Milano. The initiative aims to digitize a selection of articles written by Orio Vergani, a famous Italian journalist, including reports on the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France (1933-1958). Thanks to the open source software Manifold, an accessible digital archive will be created and compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA standards. With the use of OCR software, documents will be transformed into searchable files, ensuring simple and inclusive online consultation.

The project “Insight – Heritage accessible for all”, promoted by the Triennale of Milano, focuses on the digitization of over 300.000 works of art, including historical photographs and design objects. Thanks to artificial intelligence, it will be possible to offer innovative navigation, allowing even people with visual, hearing or motor disabilities to explore the archive independently. Augmented Reality and Data Visualization technologies will make the experience even more interactive, offering a new way to enjoy cultural heritage.

The project “ARCHIVES – La Milano that you didn't know about in Augmented Reality” aims instead to enhance the heritage of Milanese libraries through a Web App which, thanks to Augmented Reality, will allow you to explore literary and historical itineraries connected to some places in the city, such as the Lazzaretto di Milano of Alessandro Manzoni's "Promessi Sposi" or Palazzo Bovara in Corso Venezia, the first home of the famous writer Stendhal. The project also includes narrative podcasts and smartglass tours, offering an immersive experience that intertwines historical archives and real locations.

Another important initiative is “The archive on stage. The papers of La Scala between the 19th and 20th centuries”, which aims to enhance the archive of the Società anonima per l'esercizio dei teatri alla Scala and Canobbiana. The project includes the creation of a multimedia platform that will allow access to inventories and historical documents, with complete publications of issues of particular interest. The archive will be accessible through a specific thesaurus, and musical podcasts and narrations inspired by historical documents will be created, making this heritage accessible also at an international level.

Finally, the Bagatti Valsecchi Foundation and the MEET Digital Culture Center present “Digital Escape Room – Play with History”, a project that combines play and learning. Thanks to a digital escape room, users will be able to explore stories related to the cultural heritage of the Foundation through interactive paths that combine entertainment and education, offering a new way to approach culture and art.

Besides Milano, 11 projects concern the province of Brescia, 6 those of Bergamo and Varese, 5 that of Mantua, 4 that of Sondrio, 3 that of Pavia, 2 that of Monza Brianza, 1 that of Cremona, Como and Lecco. Several initiatives have supra-provincial value.
