Licata, in ancient Finziade we return to digging for a month

Starting next Monday, excavations will resume on Mount Sant'Angelo di Licata, in the Agrigento area, to reconstruct the urban layout of ancient Finziade and gain a better understanding of the characteristics of daily life in the last Greek foundation of Sicily (282 BC).

The activities, supported by the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento and by the director, Roberto Sciarratta, following an agreement stipulated between the Park authority and the National Research Council (CNR) of Catania, represent the start of a new season of research and are part of the "Finziade project" program, directed by the archaeologists Alessio Toscano Raffa for the Cnr-Ispc Catania, and Maria Concetta Parello, with the logistical coordination of Rosario Callea, of the Park of the Valley of the Temples.

Researchers, archaeologists and students will return to the construction site from 6 to 31 May, ten years after the last interventions in one of the best preserved cities of Hellenistic-Roman Sicily, and will focus on a sector that houses houses visible up to two metres high.

Finziade played an important strategic role during the 2nd-1st century BC, both from a military and commercial point of view, establishing an early link with Rome during the Punic Wars (3rd century BC) and benefiting from considerable wealth, of which the exceptionally preserved structures on the site are a reflection.. In addition to a large team of researchers, specialized archaeologists and students from various Italian universities (Catania, Palermo, Naples, Rome, Milano), approximately 50 students from the Linares high school and the Fermi institute in Licata will take part in the activities, as will more than 25 volunteers from the Gral association (Licatese archaeological research group) and the Finziade archaeological group, who will alternate during the month of excavation.

«The “Finziade project” is characterized by its strong public connotation, aimed at the active involvement of the local community, in line with the cultural policy of the Park - he claims the director, Roberto Sciarratta - In this way we want to strengthen our relationship with the entire Licatese community which has always dedicated itself to the protection and valorisation of the enormous archaeological heritage it possesses. Thanks also go to the company Edil Pira srl which, in the spirit of collaboration, sponsored the research by providing the equipment for the excavation."

It is possible to have constant updates on the activities and news of the project by following the social pages (Facebook and Instagram) of the Finziade project-monte Sant'Angelo di Licata and of the Valle dei Templi Park.
