Pisa, the capital of Smart Cities: recognition for innovation in Central Italy

Pisa's deputy mayor Raffaele Latrofa celebrates the "City Vision" award and the ongoing projects for an increasingly intelligent and sustainable city.

Pisa, the capital of Smart Cities: recognition for innovation in Central Italy.

Pisa is the best smart city among the municipalities of central Italy with a population between 50 thousand and 100 thousand inhabitants. For this reason in recent days it has obtained the “City vision” award which measures the degree of "intelligence of all Italian municipalities. The award was collected at the fifth edition of the General States of Intelligent Cities which took place in Padua in recent days by the deputy mayor and smart city councilor, Raffaele Latrofa.

Pisa's primacy is also confirmed by the special ranking of the 110 provincial capitals where the Municipality of Pisa placed first 12 th, first among the Tuscan municipalities. The first overall prize was awarded to the city of Milano.

«A great satisfaction to receive this recognition - said the Deputy Mayor Raffaele Latrofa - which sees Pisa ranked first among the medium-sized cities of central Italy. Since the beginning of our mandate we have been committed to creating the best conditions to make the city increasingly 'smart' and modern in services, quality of life, sustainable mobility. Satisfaction, then, it is twofold because on the one hand we already obtain an important recognition from a highly qualified third party that, independently, has drawn up a ranking on a national basis, taking into account many parameters; on the other hand we are in the midst of an important smart city project. In fact, we are working on a public tender that puts public lighting up for tender, which will have to take into account fundamental aspects such as the best valorization of our monuments and energy saving, with latest generation LEDs that will allow savings of 25/30%, but also decongestion from traffic and wild parking in the city districts. The experimentation will start from Porta a Lucca, on the occasion of sporting events at the municipal stadium. By the end of the year we will publish a specific tender with the project financing criterion for the assignment of the service. This is a qualifying point of our administrative mandate and we will soon be able to see its concrete implementation precisely in terms of a smart city. Furthermore, I would like to thank Pisamo, in particular the sole director, Andrea Bottone, and the general manager Alessandro Fiorindi, and their staff for what they have been able to do in recent years to create the conditions for an increasingly intelligent city, in particular on the subject of mobility and cycle paths.».

The “City vision” award promotes the culture of smart cities through an activity that intends to map, distinguish and reward the most promising initiatives and projects developed throughout Italy.

Every year, Blum and Prokalos develop the City Vision Score, an indicator that measures the level of “intelligence” of the 7.896 Italian municipalities. This score is based on 30 indicators divided into the six dimensions of the smart city: Smart Governance, Smart Economy, Smart Environment, Smart Living, Smart Mobility, Smart People.
