Milano, from today you can climb the Panoramic Battlements at the Sforzesco Castle
The cultural offer a Milano is enriched with a new visit itinerary to the battlements of the Sforzesco Castle: da today in fact the climb to the Panoramic Merlate will be open to the public and can be used independently, without the need to book a guided tour, after purchasing a dedicated ticket.
The battlements were the soldiers' patrol walkways and had the function of allowing the constant monitoring of the security status of the Castle, which at the time of the Sforza family it was a military fortress, as well as a ducal residence.
Il section of the walkway made accessible by the Municipality of Milano – Sforzesco Castle, in collaboration with the educational services concessionaires Ad Artem and CoopCulture, will now allow a new individual visit experience, which will complement the guided tour proposals already active.
The Panoramic Battlements are accessed from the staircase of the Cortile della Rocchetta (over one hundred steps, with the possibility of taking the lift up for people with walking difficulties and strollers) until you reach the top floor of the Treasure Tower. From there, the route winds along three sides of the Rocchetta – the most inaccessible part of the Sforzesco Castle: starting from the north-west side, towards Sempione Park, then continue anticlockwise to the south-west, towards the city center and the Duomo.
The route lasts approximately 40 minutes and will be accessible to groups of up to 25 people (every 20 minutes) from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 17pm, upon purchasing the ticket online on the website of Civic Museums of Milano or at the dedicated ticket office at the Info Point of the Castello Sforzesco.
The climb to the Panoramic Battlements will allow visitors to discover the defensive system and admire the urban skyline from multiple points of view, recognizing the most significant places, and at the same time understand the complex and fascinating structure of the Sforzesco Castle.
A series of descriptive panels accompanies the route: historical notes, details on the Sforza defense systems, curiosities and information on visible points of interest are highlighted. In particular, the panels tell the visitor the history of the Sforzesco Castle and the different elements of its defense system: from the ancient wall of the Ghirlanda, to the Rivellino of Santo Spirito, up to the loopholes, the machicolations and the battlements. There is no shortage of mention of the legends that have made the Castle famous and references to the many points of interest of the medieval and modern city, from the Cathedral to the Unicredit Tower, from the Bell Tower of San Gottardo in Corte to the Vertical Forest, up to the buildings of Giovanni Muzio and Gio Ponti and the CityLife Towers, embracing with your gaze the transformation of the city, from the ancient medieval network to the contemporary city.
