Isernia: “ROADPOL SAFETY DAYS” campaign concluded with the objective of zero road casualties

From the 16 to the 22 September, promoted by the European Roads Policing Network ROADPOL – European Roads Policing Network and with the support of DG – MOVE Directorate-General for Transport of the European Commission, the campaign “Safety Days”, with the aim zero road casualties throughout the European Union.

The initiative was promoted in Italy by State Police which, through the specialization of the Highway Police, activated in the month of September prevention and contrast services to the behaviors considered to be the main cause of road accidents, with particular regard high speed, failure to use safety devices and child restraint systems and the use of cell phones while driving.

- goals of the campaign are:

  • raise social awareness on the phenomenon of mortality and serious accidents on European roads;
  • draw attention of road users on the need to align with the European target of a 50% reduction in the number of road fatalities by 2030;
  • demonstrate that, with a broad support from the community, we may be able to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on Europe's roads.

In the wake of this initiative, the Highway Police is carrying out awareness campaigns starting from the youngest, through training events in schools, aimed at new drivers and young people about to obtain their driving licence.

The Isernia Highway Police Section involved, on the day of Friday September 27, the students of the ISIS Fermi-Mattei of Isernia with a theoretical/practical lesson, focused on correct behaviors to adopt when driving vehicles.

The initiative saw the commitment of 90 students, to whom fundamental notions were transferred on the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving, a source of distraction and the main cause of many road accidents, as well as the consequences deriving from getting behind the wheel, while intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics.

The students were then shown the special equipment used by operators to combat incorrect driving behaviour, including travelling at speeds that are not always permitted or unsuitable for road conditions.

The lecture certainly attracted the curiosity of the students and raised their awareness of the fact that, by each doing their part, it is possible to significantly reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on European roads.
