Cagliari and Cinema, the new life of the former Buoncammino prison: set of the Rai TV series “Portobello”.

The former prison is a suitable site for filming movies and television series, so interesting for the film industry.

This is what they were able to ascertain. Deputy Mayor Cristina Mancini and Councillor for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Maria Francesca Chiappe, visiting the former Buoncammino prison, set of the Rai TV series “Portobello”, produced by Our Films Spa and Kavac Film Srl, and filmed partly in Sardinia. The series, set in the 80s, tells the story of the legal case of Enzo Tortora, a well-known journalist, presenter and television author.

Representing the administration, Mancini and Chiappe met Director Marco Bellocchio at work during some filming, immersing himself in the film set inside the former prison, closed in 2014. Here, the cells were scripted and re-staged for the series, which involved about a hundred people, including production staff and extras. Filming has just finished in Cagliari and will continue in the coming days in Oristano and Sassari, with the commitment and support of the Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission of the Sardinia Region.

"Witnessing how a scene is shot in subjective, with the same perspective as the director, was exciting. - declares Maria Francesca Chiappe -; as a journalist, I have visited the prison in the past with the inmates while on this occasion I saw it teeming with life. We can truly speak of a new perspective for Buoncammino: speaking with the representatives of the production, it emerged how the prison lends itself as a location for filming films and television series. This should strengthen us in the idea of ​​not changing the face of the prison and foresee, in addition to the museum, a new use of this historical and identity asset".
