Scala, Sangiuliano: “Meyer was not fired, no lifetime appointments”

Scala, Sangiuliano: “Meyer was not fired, no lifetime appointments”

“Nobody hunted Dominique Meyer who will remain in his role as superintendent and artistic director of the Teatro alla Scala until his contract expires. The Board of Directors, made up of authoritative people who rightly do not act on my command, thanked him and only decided to open a new phase. A choice in the natural order of things. I have received news that further financial recognition for his work would also be envisaged. I have been a minister for a year and a half and when his mandate ends we will have coexisted and collaborated peacefully for two and a half years. Meyer is an estimable person who has worked well, but the governing bodies of La Scala cannot be denied the right to open a new season with a person who has demonstrated equal value.".

The Minister of Culture declared it, Gennaro Sangiuliano.

“There is no lifetime appointment, there is no legal automatic renewal and even less a crime of lèse majesté: in August 2025 Meyer will have remained in office for over five years. As for the rule on retirement age, this belongs to a general choice that certainly does not refer to him. Magistrates and university professors retire at 70. Journalists and diplomats at 67, as well as many senior state leaders. It was a common sense choice. For the rest I wish him the best.", concluded the Minister.

Scala, Sangiuliano: “Meyer non è stato cacciato, no incarichi a vita”
