Milano: from 1 to 5 March the eighth edition of “Milano MuseumCity 2024”.
Friday 1st March the eighth edition of "Milano MuseumCity”, the Milanese event promoted by the Municipality of Milano in collaboration with the MuseoCity ETS Association which opens the doors of public and private museums, artist archives, house museums, art foundations and business museums, not always accessible to the public.
“Worlds a Milano”, the theme chosen for 2024, unites the 109 participants in a tribute to one of the most distinctive characteristics of the city: its ability to welcome different cultural stimuli and interconnect them to give life to its own culture.
“This eighth edition sees 'Milano MuseumCity' extend its programming by a further two days compared to previous years – declared the Councilor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi –. An enrichment of the program that will allow us to expand the opportunities for visits, offer an even wider range of possibilities - from art to design, from fashion to science, from archeology to literature, to music - to conquer curiosity and interest of a public not accustomed to entering exhibition and museum spaces".
Among the novelties of this edition are two special projects: “Museums in the Gallery” and "Museums in the Showcase”.
“Museums in the Gallery” has the aim of creating a cultural exchange by strengthening the concept of a widespread museum, one of the founding values of MuseoCity: nine art galleries associated with ANGAMC (National Association of Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries) host a work of art or a project of as many museums and archives of the MuseoCity network.
Participants: 10 AM ART with Leonardo3 Museum, Cardi Gallery with MAS – Museum of Art and Science, Dep Art Gallery with the Emilio Scanavino Archive, M77 Gallery with the Emilio Isgrò Foundation, NP ArtLab – Martelli Fine Art with Benevelli Archive, Nuova Morone Gallery with the Piero Manzoni Foundation, Osart Gallery with the Agnetti Archive, Salamon Fine Art with the Federica Galli Foundation, Tommaso Calabro with the Fausta Squatriti Archive.
“Museums in the Showcase” illustrates Milanese creativity and the close relationship between art and industry. The windows of eleven Made in Italy brands (Alessi, Artemide, Atlas Concorde, Cassina, De Padova, Kartell, Lavazza, Marazzi, Missoni, Molteni&C, Poltrona Frau) present ad hoc displays which, through archive materials and iconic pieces, describe their respective business cultures: a way to make “Milano MuseoCity” is even more participatory and widespread.
To echo the project “Museums in the Showcase” underlining the concept that gave rise to it, the exhibition “Exposure. Art, cultures, fashion inside and outside the showcase”, at MUDEC, invites the public to enter – in a literal and metaphorical way – the large museum showcase to understand the multiple meanings that an object can take on in an exhibition case. The exhibition presents works by Theo Eshetu, Monia Ben Hamouda, Mark Dion, Sam Durant, Damien Hirst in dialogue with the museum's collections.
The section “Secret Museum”, which has always characterized the MuseoCity event, is revealed this year 63 unpublished works or proposed in an innovative way, and pays particular attention to childhood: in collaboration with Alchemilla, MuseoCity promotes workshops in various locations (Atelier Pharaildis Van den Broeck Archive, Rachele Bianchi Archive, Casa Museo Spazio Tadini, Alik Cavaliere Art Centre) for girls and boys through whom they can tell their way of seeing and interpreting art, starting from the works selected for the Secret Museum.
Many new participants, including Archivio Storico Fondazione Fiera Milano, Sisal Historical Archive and Widespread Museum, Touring Club Italiano Historical Archive, Banco BPM, Giuseppe Iannaccone Collection, Gio Ponti Archives, Kasa dei Libri, Palazzina Appiani – FAI and many others.
On the occasion of the event, Palazzo Reale presents the exhibition by photographer Alex Trusty “Contemporary Museum Watching” which brings together around 60 previously unpublished shots. In his works, created between 2015 and 2023, in over 80 museums, Alex Trusty captures everything that happens around the work of art and in particular from the viewer's point of view.
Among the numerous initiatives the following are worth mentioning.
Stefania Tansini's contemporary dance performance “L'ombelico dei limbi”, at the PAC, inspired by the French playwright and actor Antonin Artaud.
“Around the World in 5 Days”, promoted by the Profumo di cultural association Milano, exhibits unique pieces of art and craftsmanship collected in the most hidden corners of the world, ethnographic relics of prestigious workmanship selected to restore to the public the imagination and fascination of Jules Verne's novel "Around the World in 80 Days". The interesting finds are lent exclusively by some artisan workshops in the Galleria&Friends network which keep them in their historical archives.
The concert promoted by the Leonardo3 Museum at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, where you can listen to music played on the reproduction of musical instruments inspired by those designed by the genius of Vinci.
The yoga session at the Museo del Novecento, immersed in the neon light of Lucio Fontana.
In the Bicocca Nursery, researchers from the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences - Biome Research Team, accompany visitors to discover the dense network of interactions between micro and macro organisms.
At the end of the event, the screening of the film “Mondi a Milano” dedicated to the MuseoCity network, directed by Giovanni Pitscheider, and created thanks to the support of MUMAC – Cimbali Group Coffee Machine Museum.
"Milano MuseumCity” this year it avails itself of the support of Deutsche Bank, DWS and MUMAC – Cimbali Group's Coffee Machine Museum, as well as the collaboration of Abbonamento Musei Lombardia/Valle d'Aosta, ANGAMC (National Association of Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries ), MUDE | Lombardy Circuit of Design Museums, Museimpresa and Photography Network.
