Culture, tourism and traditions: ended on October 14, 2024, the Liguria Region mission in New York on the occasion of Columbus Day 2024, organized within the framework of the program “Italea” of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dedicated to the valorization of Italian roots in the worldThe Ligurian delegation, together with the Municipality of Genoa, the Carlo Felice Theatre, the Genoa Liguria Film Commission, Euroflora and Mei, the Museum of Italian Emigration, took part in numerous cultural, tourist and networking events, with the aim of promote the territory and strengthen ties with the Italian-American community and the US tourist market.
The events calendar of the Ministry's "Italea" mission kicked off with an event proposed by Liguria: the mission was inaugurated by the concerts "A Bridge of Music” of the Orchestra of the Carlo Felice Theatre, which performed 8 and 9 October at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral with a tribute to Lorenzo Da Ponte e Niccolo Paganini. Two days of sold out, with standing ovations and three encores in the first evening alone.
Il 10 October attention shifted to the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, where the teaser of the documentary “Amadeo Peter Giannini“. The presentation, accompanied by the speeches of Christina Bolla, President of the Genoa and Liguria Film Commission and of the Amadeo Peter Giannini Study Centre, told the story of the banker of Ligurian origins, underlining the historical link between Liguria and the city of New York. The event, in addition to enhancing the contribution of our region to American culture and economy, represented an important opportunity to strengthen international contacts, establish new connections and promote Liguria as a location for important film sets, in line with the regional strategy of attracting major international audiovisual productions.
October 11th Liguria was instead the protagonist of the food corners set up in Piazza Italia on Madison Avenue, where the participants in the networking event organised by the MAECI were able to discover the food and wine excellences of the region. After the B2B meetings, the 70 invited (including tour operators, travel agents and American journalists), attended show cooking and tastings of the typical products of Liguria: the focaccia with cheese, the Genoese focaccia, the mortar pesto and the Riviera Ligure DOP extra virgin olive oil were accompanied by the great Ligurian wines, Rossese, Ormeasco di Pornassio, Pigato, Vermentino and Cinque Terre.
Il 12 October, the students of the Liceo Pertini Vocal Ensemble, directed by Alberto Macrì, teacher of history of music at the Liceo Pertini and representative of the Association of Ligurians in the World, held a performance at the Italian Cultural Institute with a repertoire of traditional Italian and Ligurian songs.
The mission also included other high-level networking moments, such as participation in the evening organised by the MAECI on 13 October, during which a promotional video of our region was also presented, together with the other participants in the Ministry's initiative.
The 14 October, final day of the event, the Ligurian delegation took part in the Columbus Day Parade along 5th Avenue. Representing Liguria, the Liceo Pertini choir, which, after performing at the Mass at St. Patrick, paraded on the Columbus Foundation float, offering a musical and symbolic tribute to Italian roots and celebrating Ligurian culture and traditions in front of a million spectators, wearing the iconic “Liguria, The Italian Riviera“, the claim by which our region is known throughout the world.
