Lecce: Mayor Salvemini visits the construction site of the former Massa barracks

On the morning of March 25, the mayor of Lecce Carlo Salvemini, accompanied by the engineer Sergio De Nuzzo and his staff, visited the construction site of the former Caserma Massa, where the new Tito Schipa square is taking shape, a renewed urban space dedicated to relationships, sociality, commerce and parking.

The new Tito Schipa Square will be crossed by pedestrian paths, outdoor social spaces and new public greenery. It will host a parcheggio for public use on three underground levels with 466 parking spaces and a building buildings with commercial and management functions between via 95° Infantry Regiment, via San Lazzaro and Via Cavallotti. It will be done a market area and the main architectural enhancement work will consist in the relocation following restoration of the ancient Art Nouveau roof.

«For about twenty years, Piazza Tito Schipa – declares mayor Salvemini – it was a void and a fence, a project that had run aground and which we unblocked to allow the resumption of the works which today can be seen proceeding briskly. A new square means new functions, new relationships, new activities. It means 466 parking spaces on three levels that offer alternatives to parking in the central area. It means the new Liberty canopy recovered for the use of the public area market. It means offices and management activities, it means greenery, it means the great center of Lecce which is enriched with a new function of relationships and sociality. If all goes well, without further hitches, by 2024 the car park could already be made available to the people of Lecce, while the subsequent phases of the project will be completed in 2025. It is a great achievement, we are happy and also very proud of the fact of seeing many workers at work, it is a project that we can't wait to be completed to give this long-awaited work to the city of Lecce. Piazza Tito Schipa will be a new urban space that offers itself as a place of exchange, relationships, commerce and rest".
